Methods and techniques

WITH French"decouper" translates to "cut". For decoupage, ready-made cut-out pictures are actually used, which are then transferred to any surface with glue - like a children's applique.

This trend originated in the hoary Middle Ages, when, with the advent of fashion for oriental style, European craftsmen began decorating furniture with paper drawings and fixing them with varnish. Decoupage gained particular popularity in France under Louis XVI. Despite more than six hundred years of history, this technique is now experiencing a rebirth and is considered cutting-edge.

New directions have also emerged. Do-it-yourself furniture decoupage can be done in various ways:

• Classic - the desired element is cut out of paper with a pattern, glued to the base and opened with varnish.
• Artistic decoupage - the glued pattern here rather acts as a background, and the main elements are drawn by hand. This technique is quite complicated and is not suitable for beginners.
• Reverse decoupage – used on transparent surfaces. The picture is glued to the back side glass table top or doors, then paint over the “background” with light acrylic paint or complement it with patterns.
• Volumetric decoupage of furniture is a cross between sculpture, artistic painting and appliqué. On the surface are created three dimensional shapes using modeling pastes and gels, and then pasted over according to the standard scheme.
• Decopatch - instead of thin paper, other materials are used here, for example, lace and fabric.

Materials for work

For each technique, there are general and highly specialized (specific to it) materials and tools. Craft supply stores offer a variety of necessary tools for decoupage furniture: rice paper napkins, large-format cards, templates, various paints and varnishes. It can be difficult for beginners to understand this diversity, so let’s take a closer look at the main consumables.

Decoupage cards

It's just a set of pictures printed on multi-layer paper. Here you will find a variety of patterns: Chinese motifs and photo landscapes, intricate plant patterns and animal images. The design, as when working with ordinary napkins, is cut out or torn out of the card by hand, and then glued to the desired place.

Usually the top layer of decoupage blanks is very smooth, but the bottom layer is a little rough so that the image adheres well to the surface.

Glue

For beginning craftsmen, regular PVA, half diluted with water, will be enough. And for professional use, special decoupage adhesives are produced that do not need to be diluted. They dry quickly and do not change the shade of the drawings. In your work you can try the following tools:

• Art Рotch adhesive varnish – with a matte or glossy sheen. More suitable for decorating decorative items than for decoupage of frequently used surfaces.
• Glitter Art Potch is a glue with beautiful shimmer and sparkles.
• Textile Potch - hot melt adhesive for thick paper, wallpaper and fabric. The decoupage is fixed after ironing.
• Porzelain Potch is specially produced to securely hold jewelry on glass, ceramic or porcelain. But you will have to dry the decorated products in the oven.

Please note: thin napkins can also be glued to PVA. But if you're decorating the surface with wallpaper or fabric, shell out for professional decoupage glue.

Varnish

For decoupage, two types of fixing coating are used: alkyd and acrylic. Alkyd varnish is waterproof and ideal for kitchen furniture and is economical in consumption. However, it also has enough disadvantages: it has a strong unpleasant smell, takes a long time to dry, gives a yellowish tint to the picture. Although this tone is perfect if you are trying to achieve an aging effect on the surface.

Acrylic varnishes are produced on a water basis, so they have no pronounced odor and are absolutely transparent. In addition, they dry quickly and can create both matte and glossy shine effects.

There is also a glassy varnish for decoupage, which, after drying, protects the surface, creating a durable transparent film on it. A striking example of such a coating is Maimeri “Idea Medium”.

No less interesting craquelure varnish, which creates an antique effect on the surface, cracking after drying, for example, Antik-Technik from Rayher. Perfect for decoupaging furniture if you want to decorate your kitchen in a country style.

Preliminary surface preparation

In order for the cut out picture to stick well, not wrinkle or peel off, and for the decoupage on the furniture to look perfect, the surface to be decorated must be properly prepared.

• Fill out all the cracks in the wood (at least with a filler). If the defects are too noticeable, the surface will have to be puttied first, and then treated with fine-grained sandpaper and primed. Before decoupaging furniture, the wood should be wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust.
• The glass surface must first be washed, degreased with diluted dishwashing detergent or alcohol, and wiped thoroughly.
• The old tin surface of the cans, metal linings and handles are washed with a solution of water and vinegar (1:1). Heavy stains are scraped out using a wire brush.
• The polished surface should be carefully degreased with dishwashing detergent, avoiding getting it wet. You can try to remove the top polished layer from the wood using sandpaper or a grinder with a suitable attachment.

The prepared base, which we will decorate with napkins or wallpaper, must be painted in light color– otherwise the translucent pattern will simply be lost.

White acrylic is most often used here, but to obtain pastel shades (for example, for country style), you can add a little colored gouache to it.

Master Class

Instructions for decoupaging furniture with paper napkins:

1. Prepare the surface kitchen facades(tabletops or stool seats - whatever you have the courage to do).
2. While the background soil is drying, cut out the necessary elements from a napkin and think over the composition.
3. Remove the top layer of paper and lay it pattern down on a wet film, soak it with glue.
4. Turn over and apply the applique to the surface to be decorated.
5. Using a soft brush, smooth out the picture, carefully removing air bubbles and wrinkles. Only after the glue has completely dried should you begin to apply varnish.
6. You need to cover the entire surface (not just the design) with varnish in 3-4 layers at intervals of about an hour.

If you have chosen craquelure varnish for decoupage with a cracking effect a la “country style”, it can be applied last. But when you want to emphasize cracks, for example, with golden powder, craquelure is used as the first or second layer.

Decoupage of kitchen furniture with pieces of unnecessary wallpaper will turn a standard set into a real exclusive. The order of work will change slightly here:

1. Pre-clean and sand the surface to be glued.
2. Paint the base with light acrylic so that dark spots do not show through the paper.
3. You can cover the surface of the furniture with one piece of wallpaper or create a composition from individual pieces.
4. It is better to cover the edges with decorative strips or panels, otherwise you will constantly catch them with your hands and eventually tear them off.

The highest point of decoupage creativity was celebrated in Europe in the 17th century. It was at this time that furniture imported from China and Japan with beautiful inlays became popular. But such furniture was unaffordable for many who wanted to purchase it, and such items were brought in in limited quantities.

This is where they showed their ingenuity and a little trick mahogany specialists from Venice. They just cut oriental motifs made of paper and pasted onto furniture surfaces, covering them with multi-layered amounts of varnish. Cabinet makers had to apply 30-40 layers of varnish to achieve an analogy with the one imported from eastern countries furniture.

Local Venetian craftsmen valued their “masterpieces” much cheaper, which is why they were sold more readily.

Following furniture, similar imitation pictures began to be glued to the walls and ceilings of homes. Basically, this was done by people of low income, trying to follow the fashion in the interiors of wealthy people.

Gradually, decoupage began to win the hearts of women more and turned into a means of decorating various women's objects and gizmos: fans, screens, boxes.

Techniques and materials have changed over time, but the most important thing remains - decorating something through the skillful use of decoupage principles.

Decoupage techniques

There are five main types of decoupage:

1. Straight (the image is glued to outside decorated thing or object).

The advantages of decoupage cards are that they practically do not tear when wet, and almost do not change size when gluing. If napkins are glued mainly to a light surface, then fragments of decoupage cards can also be used on dark surfaces. The cards are very elastic and resistant to friction.

Textured paper

You can use rice paper to decoupage large and glass surfaces. It is easy to use and even a novice needlewoman can handle it. The only requirement when working with it is not to cut out fragments, but to tear them out. The paper is fibrous and lays easily on the surface. The raw material for its production is rice straw.

Rice paper napkins will give the product an original and unusual look, because... they completely repeat the shape of the object (due to the fibrous structure).

There is also mulberry and banana paper, which are also loved by decoupage artists. Rough and loose, such paper includes various inclusions; it is used in background and textured coatings.

Glue

To make the decoupage product look neat and high quality, you need to purchase water-based glue. Of course, it is best to use specially developed glue, but in the absence of one, you can use regular PVA.

If you want to change the appearance of your furniture using decoupage, use these step-by-step instructions:

1. We create in our heads or on a sheet of paper a project of what we want to get as a result of decoupage.
2. We purchase necessary materials, suitable for the design (decoupage cards, napkins, glue, varnish)
3. Sand the surface of the furniture using fine sandpaper.
4. We fill the pores of the furniture (if any) with special products.
5. We cut out a piece of napkin that we will glue to the furniture.
6. Having cut out the desired fragment, we separate the “extra” layers, leaving only the outer one, with the pattern.
7. Coat the fragment with glue using a small brush. For convenience, you can put it on polyethylene or a stationery file.
8. Carefully, so as not to damage the cut piece of napkin, transfer it to the prepared surface of the furniture (it is very convenient to do this using a file) and stroke it with a brush, trying to “drive out” all the bubbles and smooth out all the creases.
9. After waiting for the fragment to dry (don’t rush!!!), we cover the glued picture with a transparent water-based varnish.

It is advisable to repeat the last step at least three to four times, and the time between varnish coatings should be sufficient for the previous layer to dry (at least one hour).
