Is it possible to mount a toilet on linoleum? Methods and types of fixing the toilet to the floor, installation details

When renovating a bathroom, laying ceramic tiles on the walls and floors is often done before installing plumbing fixtures and furniture. After all, it’s much easier to lay all the cladding this way. In the future, we are faced with the task of how to fix the toilet on the tiles so as not to damage the lining or the product itself.

Exactly the same question arises in cases where you simply need to replace a damaged toilet with a new one. Our article describes the most common methods by which you can install a toilet on tiles.

How to install a toilet on tiles.

We are often asked: “Can a toilet be installed on tiles?” Yes, you can. But this task is not an easy one and, depending on the chosen technique, requires proper professionalism or time.

We will describe several ways in which a toilet is traditionally installed on a tile floor. And you yourself choose the most suitable one for yourself.

To get started, you should stock up on the following materials and tools (some of them may not be needed, depending on the chosen method of installing the toilet on tiles):

- corrugated pipe;
- flexible hose for wiring cold water to the toilet;
— ball valve to control water access to the toilet;
— drills for concrete and ceramic tiles;
- drill or hammer drill;
- adjustable wrench;
- screwdrivers;
- hammer;
- pencil;
— core.

Method 1. Installing the toilet on tiles with bolts.

In this method, installing a toilet on a tiled floor is done by bolting it. The advantage of this method is that the toilet is easy to dismantle without damaging the product itself or the lining, and it is also easy to put it back or replace it with a similar model if some trouble happens to the old one.

Scheme of work.

The toilet is placed in the place where it is planned to be installed and with a pencil, through the holes for the bolts, marks are made on the tile. The marks must be placed strictly in the center of the holes so that the bolts fit exactly into the holes after drilling.

Attention! How to properly drill tiles on a wall or floor so that they do not crack is described in detail in our article - “How to drill tiles”.

After the holes are drilled, they are cleaned of dust and filled with silicone, which will perform the task of waterproofing. Then dowels are inserted into the holes and the toilet is placed. Apply along the contour of the toilet silicone sealant, which will prevent moisture from getting under the product. Next, it’s a matter of small things - in drilled holes we insert the bushings and tighten the screws.

If excess silicone protrudes from under the base of the toilet, remove it rubber spatula.

Method 2. Installing the toilet on tiles without bolts.

There are times when you need to fix the toilet to tiled floor no drilling or bolts. For example, when a “warm floor” system is installed under the tiles. In this case, you can use several other methods.

Installing a toilet on a tile using cement mortar.

With the help of cement, the toilet bowl can be almost “tightly” fixed to the tiled floor. However, dismantling it will be troublesome. Especially if the toilet is connected to a cast iron sewer. In this case, the product will most likely not be damaged. Therefore, this method of installing a toilet on tiles is only suitable in cases where it is expected to be installed for many decades and will not be dismantled in the near future.

Scheme of work.

We will need a hammer, chisel, and cement. We place the toilet in its permanent location, connect its outlet to the socket of the sewer pipe, and outline the location of the product with a pencil.

Next, we remove the toilet and make small notches on the tile along the contour of the base of the toilet, lightly knocking down the top glaze of the tile using a hammer and chisel. This is necessary for better adhesion of the cement to the floor. It is better to do this work with safety glasses, as the fragments of tile glaze are quite sharp.

Then we cook cement mortar with sand (or without it), bringing the consistency to a thick consistency. We wet the floor along the contour where the base of the toilet will go, and this base itself too. Spread the solution generously onto the notched floor contour and place the toilet, slightly pressing it into the floor. We collect the excess squeezed out cement with a rubber spatula. We wait until the solution hardens.

Installing a toilet with silicone, liquid nails, or epoxy resin.

You can also glue the toilet to the tiles using such means as liquid nails, silicone sealant, epoxy resin. However, each of these means has its own disadvantages. In particular, securing the toilet using liquid nails guarantees you the same problems during dismantling as in the case of cement.

Installing a toilet with silicone- also a fairly common method. However, it is not entirely safe. Using silicone alone can cause the product to move, causing damage and injury to a person. A lot here depends on the sealant itself, professionalism, and operating conditions. Obvious advantage This method allows for extremely easy and quick dismantling of the toilet without any damage to the product or lining.

Using Epoxy Resin- another very easy and relatively safe way to attach a toilet to ceramic tiles. But damage to the tiles, if you need to dismantle the toilet, you most likely cannot avoid.

Progress.

In general, the process of installing a toilet with silicone, epoxy resin or liquid nails is similar to that with cement.

Before installation, you should degrease the area of the floor where the toilet will be placed and the toilet itself in the place where it will be placed on the floor. Next, you need to apply the adhesive to the area of the floor and the toilet itself, place it on the tile and press firmly. After this, you need to wait until the mixture dries.

So, we have told you the basic methods by which a toilet is installed on tiles. If you are interested in some nuances that are not covered in the article, you can ask our managers a question, and we will be happy to answer them.

The process of installing plumbing equipment must be carried out adhering to certain rules. Not everyone is ready to decide to install it without the help of a specialist. But, if we talk about attaching the toilet to the floor, then this task can be completed even by a beginner who is not familiar with either the design of plumbing or the rules for its installation.

Methods for installing toilets

There are three main ways to install a toilet, let’s consider them in order. But no matter which one you choose, you should remember that all installation work start with assembling the structure drain tank. To ensure that all the details are in place and you don’t confuse anything, you will need our instructions. After the device is assembled, it can be mounted in the chosen location. Another important point– make sure that all connections for water supply and drainage are ready before installation.

In order to make a choice between all methods, you should take into account the material from which the floor in the toilet is made. Not all surfaces can be used with the same type of fastening.

Dowel mounting

This is the most practical way to fix the toilet to the floor surface. You don't need to spend a lot of effort and time to complete the installation. This method is good to use when the floor is absolutely smooth and level and absolutely impossible to use if there are any unevenness or differences in the floor level. In this case, problems with flushing may occur.

It is best to mount light, compact devices on dowels; in this case, you will definitely avoid problems due to unreliable fixation. Experts recommend placing a gasket under the base of the device, and only then carry out installation. If you don't have a ready-made gasket, make one from a piece of old unwanted linoleum or rubber. To get a gasket the right size and shapes, you need to place the toilet on the linoleum or rubber and circle it with a marker. Then simply cut along the contour with a knife.

Usually, a plumbing store sells a kit along with the product itself; it includes dowels or fasteners specifically designed for plumbing devices.

So, the installation process itself looks like this:

  1. First, marking is carried out. To do this, place a toilet in the place where the device will be located and trace its base. Then it is removed and a thin layer of sealant is applied. A pre-prepared substrate is attached to this place.
  2. Next, holes for fasteners are made in appropriate places. Try to make these holes slightly larger than the diameter of the dowels. This will make installation easier.
  3. Now it's time to hammer in the dowels and install the toilet itself. It is simply screwed into place.

If it is necessary to slightly raise the device by a few centimeters, then use a piece of board. It is used to make a stand that follows the contour of the toilet base. The stand is placed on the floor and a backing is placed on top. Everything is glued together with sealant and dowels are inserted into the holes made directly in the stand and gasket.

Do not over-tighten the fasteners, otherwise you may damage the plumbing fixtures, or rather its ceramic surface. After the device is firmly fixed in its place, you can connect it to communication systems.

Fastening with glue

This method is the easiest to do with your own hands, but it will take quite a lot of time. The fact is that the epoxy resin on which plumbing fixtures are installed takes a very long time to harden, more than 12 hours. This type of fastener is also best used if your bathroom floor is level. It is usually used to install plumbing fixtures on tiles.

Let's take a closer look at how to carry out gluing with epoxy resin:

To do this, take the following components:

  • Resin;
  • Cement;
  • Solvent or plasticizer;
  • Hardener.

All this must be taken in a certain proportion. Resin - 100 parts, cement - 200, solvent - 20, hardener - 35. The components are combined in the following sequence - first heat the resin to 54 degrees. Solvent, hardener and only then cement are poured into it. During the cooking process, the mass is constantly stirred so that it is homogeneous.

The resulting resin is used within an hour and a half. It is applied to the base of the toilet in a layer of 0.5 cm and put it in place. The pipes align and press the device to the floor. Now you need to let it sit for at least 12 hours, preferably more. Only after this time has passed can the toilet be touched, connected to systems, and so on.

Taffeta fastening

This method is usually used if the bathroom floor is wooden. Taffeta is a wooden backing about 3 cm thick; plumbing fixtures are attached to it. Since the bathroom is a room with high humidity, the wooden stand must be treated with drying oil.

The taffeta is installed using anchors. Usually they are driven in in a checkerboard pattern so that they protrude a couple of centimeters.

The recess for the toilet is filled with cement and then taffeta is installed there so that the anchors are at the bottom. It turns out that the surface of the taffeta should practically not protrude above the floor, but be flush with it.

The solution must harden thoroughly; for this, the toilet is left alone for twelve hours. After this, installation can continue. The equipment is additionally fixed with screws. In this case, it is necessary to use rubber spacers. Then the surface of the device will not be damaged when fixing the screws, that is, when tightening them.

Experienced craftsmen recommend lubricating the screws with graphite or grease before installation. Then, if necessary, they will be very easy to remove. Instead of wood for taffeta, you can use rubber 0.5-1.5 cm thick. A rubber mat is ideal for this. A support made in this way should be a couple of centimeters smaller than the toilet support.

Hidden mount

There is another type - this is a hidden toilet mount. It differs slightly from the method described first, but still has its own nuances. Let's look at the process in detail:

  1. As with open method installation, with the hidden method, a contour is also drawn on the tile that follows the base of the toilet. The attachment points are also marked.
  2. The hidden fastening kit is placed on the floor and markings are made along which the holes will be drilled.
  3. Next, the mount is secured with bolts.
  4. The toilet is installed in its place and secured with bolts. In this case, the emptiness of its base should fall on the hidden fasteners. It is fixed through the side holes. You should not immediately tighten the bolts too much so that you can later adjust the toilet when connecting to the systems.

If you need to install hidden fasteners, but you cannot drill the floor, then use the following methods:

  • Place the toilet on liquid nails.
  • Seal it with silicone sealant.
  • Apply epoxy resin.

Whatever method you choose, always keep in mind that for better adhesion, the surface of the tile must be cleaned sandpaper so that it acquires the desired roughness. Only then will the adhesion of the two surfaces work best.

There is also the option of side-mounting the toilet to the floor. It is usually used on flush-mount toilets or if you need to install a corner toilet. Then just purchase a special set of side mounts. The toilet is mounted on plastic brackets, which are supplied with screws, dowels and caps.

So, we have considered all the known methods of attaching such a plumbing device as a toilet to the floor. All methods are very different from each other in the complexity of implementation and the time spent on their implementation. However, all of them are easy to implement without outside help. It is very important to choose the right type of fastener for each specific case. This depends on many factors, such as, for example, the material from which the bathroom floor is made.

If you cannot fix the toilet to the floor, you should change your attitude towards the toilet. After all, relationships are like air. To spoil them, it is enough to fail to restrain yourself once.

If you don’t know how to fix a toilet to the floor, read ancient books, because in them you will easily find what others have found with such difficulty in everyday and professional experience.

Evil people came up with new way get the neighbors downstairs early in the morning: drill holes to attach the toilet to the floor.

Attaching the toilet to the floor by drilling

At fixing the toilet to the floor, it is not always possible to drill holes in the floor and fasten the toilet with the bolts that come with it.

For example, when in screed under the toilet pass water pipes. This sometimes happens in new houses. In them, pipes supplying water come from a distribution unit located on the site of each floor. Hot and cold water meters are also located there.

It also happens that it is more convenient to stretch one of the pipes in a screed from one of the risers than to groove the walls and lead it around the perimeter.

In this case, drilling the floor is extremely dangerous. After all, you can simply not guess the location of the pipe, damage it and create problems for yourself. You will have to remove the tiles on the floor, dismantle the screed and repair the damaged section of the pipe. It is unlikely that anyone is ready for such additional difficulties with an already completed repair.

But with the above-described arrangement of pipes in the screed under the toilet, there is another, completely reliable way fix the toilet to the floor, lined ceramic tiles. You can simply glue it with silicone sealant. This is done simply.

Securing the toilet to the floor with sealant

Install the toilet in the place where you intend to leave it in the future. Apply masking tape along the contour where the toilet joins the floor, as in the photo. This is done so that the silicone sealant does not heavily smear the floor surface around the toilet. It is not easy to wipe off the sealant, so it is better to save yourself from this tedious operation.

Now the toilet needs to be slightly raised above the base of the floor. The resulting gap will be filled with sealant. You can raise the toilet by placing something not very hard under it in three places. In this case, I used wire scraps. Nylon dowels, wooden pencils, or something similar will also work.

It is better to use sealant in gun tubes. The tube has a thin and long spout, which is easy to fill the resulting gap, which must be filled without sparing the sealant. Your task is to squeeze the silicone under the base of the toilet and fill it well. If the sealant is only on the edge and only slightly “grabs” the toilet, then there is a high probability that it will come off in the future, and perhaps very soon.

Need I say that the surface of the floor and the glued part of the toilet must be clean and dry? There is probably no one reading this article who would decide to glue dirty, dusty surfaces.

Now that the sealant has been applied and you are sure that it has “clogged” the space under the toilet, you can remove the wire scraps and let it “sit” in place. If the toilet is unstable and does not adhere tightly to the surface, then you need to put something heavy on the seat. The instability must be determined in advance, before the gluing process. You should also not fill the tank with water until the sealant has set. The water tank can overweight and pull the toilet away from the floor plane.

Excess squeezed out sealant should be removed. It is more convenient to do this with small rags prepared in advance. Cut several of them so that you can throw them away after each movement around the toilet without fear of not having enough.

Carefully remove the sealant using several circular motions. Get rid of excess silicone completely. Dried sealant will be extremely difficult to remove. It’s better to do everything at once and slowly.

Some plumbing fixtures begin to work worse after prolonged use. A common problem with toilets is loose fixation. Because of this, it is inconvenient to use a wobbly device. You can secure the toilet so that it does not wobble with your own hands if you have some skills in handling tools. There are several ways to do this.

Features of plumbing installation

Plumbing fixtures are installed based on the installation instructions supplied with them. During construction or overhaul This work is performed by professional plumbers. Later, after moving in, many residents independently make their own adjustments to the bathroom design and change the appliance to another one.

To perform such work efficiently, it is important to know what methods of securing the device to the flooring exist and how to perform them correctly. Installation features are directly related to the configuration of the plumbing. Typically, domestic bathrooms use compact floor-mounted models. The mounting of such plumbing fixtures varies.

Reasons for a loose toilet

Before fixing the device to the flooring surface, it is important to determine the reason for the loosening of the plumbing fixtures. There are usually several of them, but they come down to three main ones:

  • uneven floor coverings;
  • plumbing installed with errors;
  • defects and irregularities on the bottom surface of the bowl.

Bathroom floors are usually covered with a concrete base, but there are also wood options. Due to the loss of tightness of the fastening screws during operation, a toilet mounted on a wooden surface begins to wobble. Sometimes cracks form where the screws are attached to the boards. This is what most often causes loss of stability.

Sometimes the surface concrete screed poured in violation. This leads to deformation and a difference in floor height. This also makes the toilet “walk”. In some cases, the cause of unreliable fastening is non-compliance with the toilet installation technology.

Fastening plumbing fixtures to a wooden floor

If the bathroom floor is made of wooden planks, the loose plumbing fixture is not fixed back in its original location. It is correct to move the device slightly to the side and screw it in a new place. However, it is recommended for reliable fixation drill holes whose location coincides with the mounting holes and secure with screws.

There is no need to try to tighten loose screws in the same place if the floor is made of planks. This will lead to cracking of the device itself. To make installation easier, it is better to make the supply line to the sewerage system from the toilet flexible.

Securing the toilet to a concrete floor

It is much more difficult to fix the problem if the flooring has a concrete base. In old buildings from the USSR, the devices were installed on concrete floors with embedded boards. In this case, to improve fastening, perform the following steps:

  1. They shut down the system.
  2. Disconnect the sewer drain pipe.
  3. Remove the bolts securing the plumbing fixtures to the floor.

Important!

Further work is carried out carefully so as not to damage the fragile material of the old toilet.

To eliminate the damage, the old backing board is removed and new lumber of considerable thickness is laid in its place. You can simply clear this place and concrete it.

After the concrete has hardened, plumbing installation is carried out in the following order:

  1. Having placed the toilet in the desired area, mark the points where it will be attached.
  2. The plumbing fixtures are removed and holes are made in the marked area using a hammer drill.
  3. The device is secured with bolts.
  4. Reinstall the drain tank.
  5. Connect plumbing with sewer pipes corrugated eyeliner.

Installation on ceramic tiles

IN modern apartments The floor in the bathroom is usually made of tiles. Then the plumbing has a backlash when the tiles are not level and have differences. This type of defect is the most difficult to eliminate. After all, in order to get rid of the wobbling of the plumbing fixture, you must first eliminate the unevenness of the floor. It is impossible to do this without dismantling the tiles.

Therefore, to begin with, the problem is eliminated by placing a plastic gasket under the base of the plumbing fixture. Such devices are sold in construction stores and are quite inexpensive. If this option does not bring the desired result and the instability continues, dismantle the tiles and lay the covering again.

Important!

Silicone sealant is sometimes used as a gasket. They coat the area of the tiled floor where the device should be located. When the material is completely dry, install it. This method helps to temporarily solve the problem of a wobbly device.

How to attach a toilet to the floor

To do the job efficiently, the master will need the following tools:

  • hammer drill for construction work with several drills of different sizes;
  • a hand drill along with a set of drills of different diameters for ceramic tiles;
  • sandpaper with different sizes grains;
  • rubber spatulas of different sizes;
  • mechanical hand press;
  • screwdrivers, bench wrenches and other tools.

Additionally you will need the following materials:

  • plastic dowels of different diameters;
  • metal screws or screws;
  • several spacers for screws;
  • construction adhesive;
  • cement and sand;
  • rubber sheet 15 mm thick;
  • boards 25 mm thick.

Standard toilet fastening involves drilling holes in the floor for dowels. Then make 4 holes. If the device is mounted with screws, then only 2 holes need to be made. Difficulties are caused by drilling openings when the floor is covered with ceramic tiles. Due to awkward movement or incorrect selection of tools, the tiles easily crack.

Important!

It is necessary to drill ceramics with a drill designed for this purpose, setting the rotation speed of the device to low. During operation, the pressure on the tool should be light.

When fixing the device to cement mortar, it is important to properly prepare the working mixture so that the connection is of high quality. To do this, take 1 part of M200 cement and add 2 parts of sand.

Securing the toilet with screws

To secure the toilet to the toilet floor in the standard way with screws, perform the following steps sequentially:

  1. The exact position of the sole is determined on the toilet floor.
  2. Marks are placed in the center of the holes.
  3. Using a special tile drill, make recesses the size of which corresponds to the thickness of the tile.
  4. Then they take a concrete drill and bring the excavations to a depth of 70 mm.
  5. Insert dowels into the resulting recesses.
  6. The toilet is placed in the required place so as to align the mounting holes of the plumbing with similar ones in the floor.
  7. Connect the device to the sewer with a corrugated pipe.
  8. Secure the plumbing fixtures to the floor with screws from the installation kit.

Having completed this work, you need to additionally ensure the tightness of the connection. corrugated pipe with sewer inlet and toilet pipe. To do this, use any sealant. Then, if there is one, the gap between the toilet sole and the floor is cosmetically sealed.

Any household item long years intensive use begins to fail, which certainly affects its functioning. This problem also affected such a popular plumbing element as the toilet. More often, problems arise with its fixation - it begins to wobble, and accordingly, it becomes uncomfortable to use. Naturally, such issues must be resolved immediately so as not to encounter more serious problems. Today we will talk about how to secure the toilet so that it does not wobble on its own.

Why does the toilet start to wobble?

How to strengthen a toilet if it wobbles? Before you figure out what to do if the toilet is crooked, you need to determine why this happens. There are several reasons:

  • Uneven floor.
  • Poor quality plumbing installation.
  • The base of the toilet is uneven.

Let's look at possible defects in more detail:

  • The second option provides for two types of flooring: concrete or wood. Often, it is on wooden floors that the fastening screws become loose, and the tightness of the fit inside the wood is lost over time.
  • It is not uncommon for cracks to appear in the boards directly at the attachment points. This is perhaps the most common cause of loose toilets.
  • If during the construction of a concrete floor some technologies were violated, then this is guaranteed to entail a violation of the fixation of plumbing fixtures.
  • Differences in floor level and unevenness also lead to similar problems. Therefore, you should clearly know how to install a toilet on uneven tiles or other type of coating.
  • As for old apartments, the weakest point in them is the mortgage board embedded in concrete. Over time, under the influence of moisture, its properties weaken, and the fixing bolts can no longer hold the device.
  • The reasons for unreliable fastening are also related to the fasteners themselves. But here the main factor of failure is the poor quality of installation work. If you do not observe the ratio of holes and recesses, then problems will certainly arise soon. Therefore, the marking of fastening points should be taken as seriously as possible.

How to solve the problem with loose plumbing yourself?

How to install a toilet on a tiled, wooden and concrete floor? “Dancing” toilets are quite common. Such little things, as a rule, drive apartment owners crazy, making their own adjustments to daily life. They make us nervous, irritate us, and some even drive us into hysterics. Therefore, such problems must be resolved promptly. Below we will look at how to solve such issues in cases with wood, concrete and tile floors.

Wooden floor

Your toilet is wobbly - what to do if it stands on wooden floor? The answer to this question is very simple! It is enough to move it slightly and re-screw the screws, but in a different place. This process is greatly facilitated by a corrugated drain pipe.

Important! Do not even try to tighten loose screws further, as this may damage the body of the plumbing fixture itself. At the new mounting location, it is recommended to drill in wooden boards holes for perfect fixation.

Concrete floor

Fixing such problems when it comes to a concrete foundation is much more difficult. But anyone can cope with this. Thus, concrete floors with embedded boards are often found in buildings dating back to the existence of the USSR. To resume fastening, you need to perform a few simple manipulations:

  1. Clean your plumbing fixtures thoroughly.
  2. Turn off the cold water supply to the device.
  3. Remove the tank.
  4. Remove connecting pipe sewer drain.
  5. Unscrew the fasteners.

Important! Since toilets are made mainly from fragile materials, you should work with extreme caution. The process of eliminating the breakdown is simple; you need to completely replace the embedded board, which is thick lumber. There is another way out of the situation - remove the board, thoroughly clean the recess under it and then concrete it.

Once the concrete is dry, follow these steps:

  1. Install the toilet, mark the points for its attachment.
  2. Make holes in the concrete using a hammer drill.
  3. Secure the device.
  4. Reinstall the cistern.
  5. Connect the water.
  6. Replace the sewer drain.

By doing this simple work, you will get rid of the problem. Pay maximum attention to the accuracy of marking the holes for placing dowels.

Ceramic tiles (video)

Situations when the toilet on the tiles wobble are no less common. We will find out what to do in this case further. The fact is that the device cannot be fixed reliably if serious mistakes were made at the stage of laying the tiles. Solving such a problem radically is perhaps the most difficult, because removing tiles is a rather labor-intensive process:

  • Experts strongly recommend that you first use the most simple option- use plastic pads, the thickness of which may vary. They will help eliminate the backlash.
  • If this option turns out to be ineffective, you will have to re-lay the tiles and install the toilet.

Important! How to install a toilet on an uneven floor? How to fill the gap? Silicone sealant is ideal for this. It is necessary to thoroughly coat the entire perimeter of the plumbing fixtures with it and wait about a day for it to completely dry. This way you will create a reliable gasket between the device and the floor. Then all that remains is to put it in place and screw it on.
