How to attach a chandelier to the ceiling in a tent. How to hang a chandelier: installation and connection to the electrical network

Every owner understands perfectly well that the choice of methods for lighting rooms allows you to give an effective look to the room, emphasize the individual preferences of the owner, and create a favorable atmosphere in the home.

Original methods of lighting an apartment characterize the image of the owner as a person with design taste, capable of creating positive emotions and a good mood among guests.

When designing independently, the master uses different kinds lamps:

  1. chandeliers;
  2. point sources of local lighting;
  3. decorative lighting strips and garlands.

Features of fastening the first two types of lighting fixtures are disclosed in this article. They are also good for attaching sconces and garlands.

How to install a chandelier on the ceiling

Before starting any work on the electrical wiring, always check it. This will eliminate the possibility of creating short circuits, will preserve your health and ensure safety at work.

The installation method depends on many factors. His choice is influenced by:

  • weight, dimensions and design of the lamp;
  • ceiling material and type;
  • the presence of fasteners installed during construction.

Mounting a chandelier on a concrete ceiling

Almost all apartments are inside multi-storey buildings Now they have ceilings made of reinforced concrete floor slabs. During their installation, builders install special hooks near the points where the wires for lamps exit or remove steel wire tied to the fittings.

The old-fashioned way of hanging a chandelier

In older houses, fastening wire is most often used, which can be bent in the desired direction. It can withstand quite a lot of weight, but to check the strength of the fastening, it is recommended to pull it with a certain force.

It is convenient to place light plastic chandeliers on such fasteners. For connection electrical wires use an adapter terminal block.

The chandelier fastening element and connecting wires are hidden inside the decorative cover.

Modern fastening methods

Chandelier hooks

The main element that absorbs the mechanical loads of the chandelier is the hook, which can have a different design.

For fastening inside reinforced concrete ceilings, hooks are produced:

  1. equipped at the opposite end with a self-tapping screw thread, screwed into a plastic dowel fixed in a drilled hole;
  2. having a rotating mechanism with stops.

The second method can be used:

  • movable legs with a locking mechanism;
  • washer with or without a cut;
  • turning plate;
  • movable stops.

This method requires creating a through hole through the floor slab with a diameter that allows passage of the turning mechanism, but reliably supports the total weight of the luminaire.

Varieties of such hooks are fastening elements made in the form of plates that can be inserted into flat slots drilled with thin drills.

Mounting brackets

These mounting fixtures do not require through holes to be created in the slab. For them, it is enough to knock out slots in the ceiling with a hammer drill for installing dowels and then screw the screws through the bracket.

The mounting strip itself can be made:

  1. plate shape with slots for fastening in different convenient places;
  2. or in the form of a crosshair made of two plates.

With the second method, you can create larger number places for fastening screws in the ceiling. Therefore, heavier chandeliers are attached to the cross plate.

Before mounting them on the ceiling, all these brackets are screwed with threaded rods to secure the base of the chandelier body with screw nuts.

Before installing the lamp, pay attention to the condition of the dielectric layer of the wires. When it is weakened, it is strengthened by winding insulating tape. However, now there are more effective heat-shrinkable tubes on sale, which are easily put on the place to be insulated, and then, under the heat of the flame of an industrial hair dryer, lighter or even a match, they fit tightly onto the surfaces to be joined.

Mounting a chandelier on a wooden ceiling

Here the main means of fastening are the simplest hooks, made at the end with a sharp self-tapping screw, which is simply screwed into the wood.

To prevent the wood from cracking and the screw to be screwed in without excessive effort, it is recommended to pre-drill the hole with a drill of a smaller size than the internal diameter of the thread on the self-tapping screw.

The mounting location must be chosen so that the hook is held not only in the boards with which the ceiling is sheathed, but also a significant part of it fits securely into the beam.

Mounting a chandelier through a suspended structure

Nowadays, home craftsmen widely use various types of suspended ceilings in the interior of rooms:

  • on a film and fabric base made of synthetic fabrics of various colors:
  • suspended structure based on plasterboard and similar dense materials.

The realization of the owner's desire to have a beautiful chandelier to illuminate such a room requires the creation of a mounting adapter, the thickness of which is selected according to the size of the gap between the canvas of the suspended structure and the concrete base.

The adapter itself is attached to the concrete in advance, before installing the suspended canvas, and then mounted decorative ceiling and through it the chandelier is hung on the mounting adapter.

You can simply screw self-tapping screws through the plasterboard covering. When suspended ceilings are used, adapters with glued rings are installed in them, inside of which an incision is made in the fabric of the canvas.

The wires are pulled through this slot and the chandelier suspension unit is mounted on the adapter.

Devices for hanging lamps

After the hook for hanging the chandelier is installed, you will need to lift the lighting device to the ceiling and connect it at a height electric wires. Such work requires the simultaneous performance of two actions:

  • reliable fixation of the lamp on the ceiling;
  • wiring installation.

Therefore, the master does not have enough hands and an assistant is needed. To frequently perform such work, you can make a simple device consisting of:

  • a hook for hanging a chandelier from the ceiling fastenings;
  • cable made of dielectric material;
  • a tip with a rotating mechanism inserted into the hole of the lamp.

The principle of its operation is illustrated with pictures.

The swivel mount works on the same principle as the fisherman's kukan. It is inserted into any hole on the body, and the chandelier hangs freely on a cable. The master has his hands free and can connect the wiring. When the rotating mechanism is disengaged, the hook is removed and a lamp is hung in its place.

This device makes installation easier. It is made for constant, same type of work. But, when a single installation of a chandelier is performed, it can simply be tied with a strong cord.

Method of mounting a spotlight on a suspended ceiling

Plasterboard structures

This material has fairly good strength and is available in sheets of different thicknesses. It is customary to install directly in drywall Spotlights.

To do this, perform work in the following order:

  1. wiring is mounted on the base ceiling with a small margin in length for connecting the cartridge;
  2. install a plasterboard structure;
  3. use special drills to drill holes for the lamp;
  4. bring out the wires;
  5. connect the cartridge;
  6. compress the fastening plates;
  7. insert the lamp into the hole until the springs are released to fix the housing.

A protective decorative cover covers the cut hole in the plasterboard.

Stretch ceiling

To attach spotlights, the same principle is used as for a chandelier - the use of an additional mounting adapter.

They are usually manufactured at the factory with the ability to adjust the height of the gap between stretched fabric and base surface. For this purpose, the stationary part is mounted on the main ceiling, and the position of the adjusting brackets is set with screw clamps.

A fastening ring is also glued onto the canvas fabric, as for a chandelier, and a cut is made inside it to pull out the wires and install the lamp. Between the light source body and tension material have a transparent protective thermal ring that provides thermal protection material.

Structures made from PVC boards

The installation of spotlights in these ceilings is carried out using the same technology as for plasterboard slabs. PVC boards have good strength characteristics and are able to reliably hold light spotlights.

Due to the fact that when replacing burnt out light bulbs, increased mechanical loads can be created, mounting adapters are also used for fastening. They are conveniently made from perforated tin strips with a galvanized surface.

Such structures are easy to create, can withstand loads well, and are designed for long-term use.

After fixing the chandelier to the ceiling, you need to connect the wires to it and the switch. This topic is presented

We invite you to watch a video on installing the chandelier.

If you know other ways to attach lamps, please tell us about them in the comments.

One of the last stages of apartment renovation is the installation and connection of lighting sources. Despite the popularity of plasterboard and tension analogues, the classic in the form of a painted ceiling will always remain popular. When installed, the height of the rooms remains unchanged. Whereas plasterboard and tension, due to the frame, eat up precious centimeters. And if these options involve installing a hidden guide for lighting, then what to do with classic version? How to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling? Let's take a closer look.

Mounting methods

There are three methods for fixing chandeliers to:

  • Using a hook. This is one of the popular methods that allows you to mount fairly large lamps, including on a leg.
  • On a hanging bracket. This method makes it possible to install lamps designed for low ceilings. These lamps are not massive, have a small height, and are pressed close to the ceiling.
  • On the cross bar. This method is designed for heavy structures.

The question “how to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling” largely depends on the chosen model of the lighting source.

and electrical wiring

Concrete structures are canvases with hollow channels.

The cable for lighting is laid in these holes. In new buildings, three-wire grounding wires are provided. This feature does not make it possible to implement the installation option with a two-key switch, since it is, of course, possible to attach the chandelier to a concrete ceiling, but you will need to use a four-core cable. It is best to contact a professional electrician for this process. Or abandon the idea of a two-key switch.

Lighting selection

The abundance of lighting fixtures sometimes makes it difficult to choose a lighting source. Moreover, the market is flooded with many low-quality Chinese products. When choosing, you should consider a number of nuances:

  • Design. Most often, lighting is chosen specifically for it. This could be a set of a ceiling lamp and sconce, or just a chandelier.
  • How many buttons are you planning to connect from? If at the installation site there are only 2 wires on the ceiling, then a 2-key connection should not be considered. And accordingly, it is better not to purchase multi-lane lamps. Otherwise, large electricity bills will come in the future. Or you may need to install the appropriate wiring.
  • Ceiling height. Massive chandeliers will look out of place in low rooms, and, conversely, on high ceilings a small lamp will be lost.
  • Dimensions of the room. If the room is large, it is better to provide two lighting sources. When zoning, both identical and different models can be used.

Taking these features into account, you can choose the right type of lighting. in this case it will not be difficult, and it will fit ergonomically into the design.

Features of modern lamps

Nowadays, lighting amazes with its variety and options.

There are models with built-in fans, various modes via the remote control, use more lamps with 12 W consumption. All these products may have additional connection blocks in their design. In such cases, installation instructions are requested from the seller. And if you are not sure that you can connect it yourself, it is better to call an electrician who knows exactly how to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling.

Preparation and safety

There are several important points at this stage of work:

  • It is better to deal with electricity in daylight hours days. This will make the job easier. There will be no need for additional lighting in the form of flashlights, and therefore no assistant.
  • Prepare the tool. This is: a drill or a hammer drill with the right kind drills/drills, indicator screwdriver, regular screwdriver and wrench for assembling the chandelier, fastener, electrical tape, pliers.
  • Before installation, turn off the electricity in the panel.
  • Remove old lighting, if any.
  • Separate the ends of the wires. Connect electricity. Determine phase and zero using an indicator screwdriver. When it comes into contact with the bare end and presses a button on the tool, the screwdriver lights up - phase, no - zero. Insulate the ends.
  • Determine the location of the wiring in the ceiling space. Floor slabs have hollow channels that are used for laying cables. For this work, a special electronic detector is used. Experienced owners always draw up or request a wiring diagram during electrical installation. In the future, this allows you to avoid many problems even during simple operations (such as “driving a nail into a wall”).
  • How to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling by and large, is quite simple, but the process itself is unsafe, then you should not forget about disconnecting the electricity from the panel at the time of dismantling, installing and connecting the chandelier. This will avoid the risk of electric shock.

Chandelier assembly

Depending on the complexity of the design, assembly instructions may be required. lighting fixture.

The process can be complicated when you need to hang a chandelier on a two-key connection system. This installation allows you to further regulate the degree of illumination in the room by turning on all the lamps or some of them.

To do this, select a model with this connection capability or slightly upgrade the existing option if:

  • The lighting device has a two-wire wire coming out for connecting to the network - it can be replaced with a three-wire wire (phase, phase, zero).
  • The lamp has a three-core cable, but one of the wires is designed for grounding (it is yellow with a green stripe). If the house is old, then grounding is usually not provided for chandeliers. Therefore, this wiring can be used to connect to the second phase.

If you need to hang a chandelier on two-gang switch, then one group of horns is connected to the first phase, the second to the other.

Having assembled and prepared the lighting device, proceed to installing the fastening element. Let's consider all types.

Hook fastener

Previously, this type of mount was used for lamps. In such cases, after dismantling the old lighting, a new chandelier should be hung on the existing fasteners. If this type of fixation is not provided, then you should first purchase it. The market today allows you to choose best option for any occasions. Here are a number of products:

  • Hook with petals. This type is suitable if the hole is in a void in the slab. When installing it, the petals open and securely fix the hook.
  • Ceiling A drill corresponding to the diameter of the anchor is selected, a hole is made, the fasteners are inserted, and the element is tightened.
  • Folding spring dowel with a ring, a bar, and a hook. A hole is drilled according to the diameter of the element, fasteners are inserted, and screwed. In this case, plaster mortar is sometimes used for greater reliability. The hole is filled with the mixture and then the dowel is installed. Time is given to harden.
  • Steel screw with ring, L-shaped hook with plastic dowel. Mounted according to the previous option.

Since hanging a ceiling chandelier, as we have already mentioned, can be done quite quickly, but the process itself is associated with the risk of receiving an electric shock, it is better to first insulate the wires coming out of the ceiling.

Hanging bracket fastener

The fixing bar and fasteners for it are included with the lamp.

But it is better to buy more powerful dowels. This will be a more reliable option, especially if you are not particularly confident that you know exactly how to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling. The hole for each hole is first marked with a pencil. It is drilled, dowels are inserted, a fixation bar is applied and secured with self-tapping screws. This fastening method can also use mortar for stronger fastening. It is important to screw the bolts onto it to secure the chandelier before fixing the strip. The cross strip is mounted in the same way.

Final stage

After installing the fastening element, you can begin to consider the question of “how to attach a chandelier to a concrete ceiling.” For this:

  • The electricity in the panel is turned off.
  • The insulation is removed from the wires of the ceiling cable.
  • The connection is made by terminal connection or by twisting and electrical tape.
  • The chandelier is fixed to a fastening element.

There are a number of features for each type of chandelier.

For models with hook fixation, the lamp is hung on it and the wires are connected. And then they cover it with a special decorative cap. Lighting with mounting on a bracket: the mounting cover from the lamp is fixed, the wires are connected, the lamp is attached to the cover. After installation, you should check the correct connection by turning on the keys one by one. If no short circuit occurs, it means you managed to hang the chandelier correctly with your own hands.

Copper and aluminum cable

In old houses you can still find modern lamps equipped with copper wires for connection. In such cases, the connection is made only using special terminals.

Otherwise, the installation will not meet the standards. fire safety. And this, ultimately, can lead to dire consequences. So, we looked at how to properly hang a chandelier from a concrete ceiling with your own hands. The difficulty of installation lies only in the discrepancy between the number of cores of the ceiling cable and the chandelier wire. These problems can be solved if you have confidence in your abilities. But since working with electricity is associated with health hazards, it is better to trust a professional.

Laziness made a man out of a monkey. Tired of climbing a palm tree for a banana, the monkey picked up a stick. The hostess was tired of always painting and greasing the cracks in the ceiling - she ordered it. No hassle - beautiful, smooth, hygienic. There is only one small but pressing question left: how to hang it on a suspended ceiling? On the one hand, it seems like you shouldn’t fool yourself; it’s easier to invite specially trained people for such work. But on the other hand, how can you find out whether they did everything correctly and whether, God forbid, any troubles will happen after such an installation? After reading this material, you will be able not only to supervise hired workers, but also to install the lighting device yourself.

Requirements for a chandelier for a stretch ceiling:

  • the flow of light should be directed downwards or to the side, but not upwards;
  • it is desirable that the lampshades have a closed shape;
  • the distance from the lampshade to the ceiling must be sufficient to prevent heating of the material;
  • with a standard room height, the tension structure already lowers the ceiling; there is no need to install a bulky chandelier;
  • the lighting fixture must have a long suspension, sufficient to be secured to the base behind the stretched canvas.

Ceiling chandeliers for suspended ceilings can be equipped with different types. When choosing one type or another, take into account the features of the PVC contract:

Lamp type Description
Incandescent lampThe low cost of these devices hides high energy consumption and high-temperature effects on surrounding objects. Such lamps are least suitable for synthetic ceilings. Minimum distance from the lamp to the PVC surface - 40 cm, and only on condition that the device is not more powerful than 60 W. The solution may be to install reflectors between the film and the lamp, but does it make sense to fence such a structure if there are other options?
An excellent option for a chandelier under a suspended ceiling. These devices have a high efficiency useful action and long service life. Such devices heat up very little and pose a danger to PVC film. Lighting can be warm or cool, depending on your preference.
HalogenHalogen lamps heat up slightly, but with prolonged use this heat is enough to deform the stretched material. A 40 W lamp should not be closer to the ceiling than 40 cm.

Designer advice! On suspended ceiling A chandelier in a contrasting color looks best. On black - white or silver, on light, respectively, dark metal.

Basic requirements for mounting a chandelier

Attaching a chandelier to a suspended ceiling should be not only durable, but also aesthetically pleasing. Suspended devices mounted on a hook or mounting strip are suitable for suspended ceilings. Overhead chandeliers that are attached tightly to the ceiling on an overhead panel are not suitable.

Important! The height of the chandelier suspension should be sufficient, taking into account the distance between the base and the stretched material.

As an option, you can consider placing the hook for fastening below the level of the PVC film, but then this point must be foreseen in advance, even before the tensioning procedure.

A little about the correct location of a chandelier for suspended ceilings

The height of the chandelier depends on several factors:

  • ceiling height;
  • ceiling covering;
  • purpose of the room.

How to hang a chandelier on a suspended ceiling in living rooms? There must be at least two meters from the floor to the bottom of the device. This way you will eliminate the danger of accidentally touching it when moving around the room. But it is better if this distance is greater, especially when the ceilings in the room are low.

Compact height devices are also suitable for hallways. This design will not interfere with opening doors. In addition, keep in mind that in the corridor people often raise their hands to remove their hats, straighten their hair, or close their umbrellas. So, the higher the lamp is located, the better.

Compact placement is also relevant. There is a risk here of not only touching the structure with your hands, but also accidentally getting hit by a stream of water from the shower.

If the ceilings in the room are higher than 3 meters, you are in luck: you can choose any shape and place it anywhere, even above. For example, it is logical to hang a lamp not in the center of the room, but above the dining group. Moreover, for working area is being organized .

Advice! Classic ceiling lamps have a suspension in the form of a chain. You can adjust its length by removing and adding links.

The most difficult question is how to attach a chandelier to a suspended ceiling at the location of the “second light”. The peculiarity of the location requires a powerful luminous flux that can spread over two or even three floors. In this case, take a closer look at designs with several tiers or a cascade of lamps.

For your information! Electrical installation rules recommend selecting hooks for lighting fixtures that can withstand five times the weight of the chandelier for at least 10 minutes. After removing the excess load, there should be no damage left on the fastening.

Thus, the choice of chandelier must meet not only design requirements, but also safety and ease of use rules.

Tools for work

The main tool in this matter is your confidence in own capabilities. Self-installation chandeliers for a suspended ceiling is not so much a complicated matter as it is troublesome and requires extreme care. And there are tools for work in almost every home:

Basis for mounting the chandelier

Between concrete or wooden ceiling and tension PVC material there is a distance. It may be different, depending on the characteristics of the room. If the ceilings initially have a defect, but with the help tension structure it's easy to fix. It turns out that in order to secure the chandelier, the empty space needs to be filled with something, to create a rigid base.

If the distance is large, a thick block cannot be used; you will have to make a frame. In this case, the perforation area of the film must be reinforced with a gasket; it will additionally protect the PVC from the temperature effects of the lamp. Such gaskets are made in the form of rings, internal and external. They are hidden behind the decorative frame of the wiring and are completely invisible.

Options for installing a chandelier on a suspended ceiling with your own hands

If you decide to start installing a lamp, take care to prepare the base in advance. After the ceiling is stretched, you will not have the opportunity to mount a stand or do any wiring. Usually the master asks in advance where you plan to hang the chandelier. You can prepare the base yourself and lead the wires to the right place in advance.

There are several ways to attach a chandelier. Let's briefly look at the main ones.

With a hook

A hook is the most familiar and common way to hang a chandelier. The only thing you have to do is adjust the length of the hook to the height tension fabric. If the hook was installed previously, most likely it will have to be replaced, since the suspended ceiling will “steal” at least 3–5 centimeters.

For fastening, a hole is drilled in the concrete ceiling, a dowel is inserted and a hook with a threaded leg is screwed into it. If the distance between the canvas and the ceiling is too large, a block is attached to the ceiling and a hook is screwed into this base.

Advice! After installing the stretch ceiling, all wiring will be hidden from your eyes. For your own peace of mind, place it in a protective case.

When attaching the chandelier to the hook, make sure that the decorative cup fits snugly to the ceiling fabric

Using a mounting plate

Fastening with a strip is found on modern models lamps. The bar itself is a metal plate with holes for fasteners. This plank is attached to the prepared base directly through the ceiling sheet. You only need to cut a small hole for the wiring.

Important! When screwing the bar to the block, be careful not to damage the wiring cord.

To make work easier and not damage the lighting fixture, it is disassembled before installation. It is necessary to remove shades, lamps and hanging decorative elements.

Using a cross bar

Mounting on a cross-shaped bar is not much different from hanging on a regular bar. Cross-shaped fasteners are usually used for heavy chandeliers. The only nuance is in preparing the base. For obvious reasons, the block is not suitable in this case.

A hole for electrical wiring should be drilled in this platform. Metal “legs” are used to adjust the platform to the height of the canvas.

How to choose dowels for mounting a chandelier

For interior work use plastic dowels. Considering the possible external temperature effect of the lighting device, it is preferable to use nylon-polyamide inserts.

If the ceiling in the room is concrete, spacers will be required. In the case where the ceilings are multilayer structures with voids it is better to use dowels.

The thickness of the element depends on the expected load. The suspended structure tends to pull the dowel out of the wall, so it is important that it has spacer tendrils and notches that additionally hold it in the thickness of the material.

To more securely secure the element in the hole, you can use construction adhesive; lubricate the dowel with it before driving it in. Do not try to screw in a screw that is thicker; it may split the liner. It is considered correct to use screws for spacer inserts.

Advice! A chandelier weighing 5÷10 kilograms is secured with an impact dowel with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of 80 mm. To complete the task you will need at least 4 dowels.

Master class for DIYers: how to fix a lamp on a suspended ceiling

And now directly about how to fix the chandelier on a stretch ceiling. As already mentioned, it is necessary to follow a clear algorithm of actions and be puzzled in advance by the location of the lighting fixture and the preparation of the base.

We offer you a small master class on how to attach a chandelier to a suspended ceiling:

Photo Description of work

The first step will be marking the location of the lamp and pulling the cord to indicate the height of the canvas. The cord is pulled from the frame through the entire room.

A block is attached to the main ceiling at the location of the chandelier. To do this, holes are drilled in the ceiling, dowels are inserted and the base is screwed with self-tapping screws.

There can be several bars, depending on the height to which the fasteners need to be raised, or you can use metal “legs” that are easily adjustable in height. It is important to thoroughly sand the surface of the block that will come into contact with the canvas.

The wiring is passed under the bar or between two elements. This way she won’t be pulled in case of an unforeseen situation.

To accurately bring the base surface to a dense level, backing elements are used. Afterwards the PVC material is stretched.

Special glue for PVC is applied to the thermal ring for the hole.

Next, you should feel the base with your hands and glue the ring in the center directly to the canvas. It will take time for the glue to dry.

A canvas is cut out in the inner part of the ring. Extreme care must be taken not to damage the wiring. Afterwards, the wire for connection is released into the hole.

Feel the location of the bar and place the mounting strip correctly.

Screw the mounting plate using self-tapping screws. Don't forget to insert the studs first.

Position the chandelier so that the pins fit into the designated holes. Secure the lamp with decorative bolts.

How to decorate the mounting location of a lamp

If you remember to use a thermal ring, the place where the chandelier is attached will already look neat. A small hole will be hidden behind the base of the lighting fixture. But if the interior design requires the creation of some additional element, use lightweight polyurethane sockets. They imitate

When dealing with a concrete ceiling, many people prefer to turn to specialists so that they can quickly hang a chandelier for them for a fee. Stops people like this a large number of bolts and fasteners, as well as the need to screw in hooks and connect all these elements to each other. But in fact, there is nothing complicated about attaching a chandelier to the ceiling, and everyone can do it on their own!

Before starting work, you need to get all necessary tool. There is nothing specific in this set, and all appliances can be found in every home.

List of tools required for work:

  1. Screwdriver;
  2. Drill or hammer drill;
  3. Key for twelve;
  4. Screwdriver with indicator;
  5. Fasteners;
  6. Pliers;
  7. Terminal block;

You will need a key for twelve when assembling the chandelier itself. And with the help of an indicator screwdriver you will determine the place where you need to connect the wires. A standard screwdriver and pliers will be needed when attaching the chandelier, and a terminal block when separating the wires.

By the way, light bulbs blinking when the power is turned off is a problem of incorrectly separated wires.

How to remove a chandelier from the ceiling

However, if you are making repairs and not equipping new apartment then, most likely, the first thing you will encounter is an old chandelier that needs to be replaced.

An old chandelier can be removed from the ceiling in several stages:

  1. Turn off the electricity in the house;
  2. Prepare terminal blocks, electrical tape and an indicator screwdriver;
  3. If the lamp has additional elements(bugle beads, lampshades), then try to remove them in advance.
  4. Unscrew the cap behind which the chandelier mount is hidden;
  5. Now you have a fastening in front of you: either a bar or a hook.
  6. Disconnect the wires by spreading them apart;
  7. Wrap exposed wires with electrical tape.

After this, you can remove the chandelier itself and prepare to install a new one. As you can see, there is nothing complicated here, and you can handle everything yourself.

If your chandelier is mounted on a strip, you may not be able to separate the wires right away. In this case, you need to loosen the bolts a little using a screwdriver.

Mount for chandelier to ceiling

As we mentioned above, chandelier mounts come in different types. And if removing a chandelier from them is an almost equally simple task, then their installation, on the contrary, can be very different.

There are two main types of mounting chandeliers on the ceiling:

  1. Hook;
  2. Plank (bracket).

The hook-shaped mount has been used since the time of the very first chandeliers, and on the Soviet market it was generally the only chandelier mount. This is why owners, when buying a new chandelier, are surprised that there is no hook and it is unclear how to attach the chandelier.

If your kit did not include a hook, then check that there should be a mounting strip somewhere. Fastening using such a strip (also called a bracket) is modern and is considered more reliable in operation.

However, the hook has not gone out of use, and many domestic companies still produce chandeliers only with a hook mount.

Attaching the chandelier to the ceiling with a hook

This method of fastening is considered more complex than fastening to a bar. And you should be careful: if the chandelier is not secured firmly enough, it can fall to the floor and break at any moment.

In addition, hook fastening is divided into two types:

  1. With standard thread;
  2. With anchor bolt.

The first version of the hook is suitable only for small-sized chandeliers whose weight does not exceed three kilograms, otherwise the mount may not withstand the load and the chandelier will fall.

If your chandelier is heavy, weighing four or more kilograms, it should come with a special anchor bolt that can withstand much more weight.

If you have a large chandelier and there were anchor bolts attached to it, then installation will be a little more difficult. You also need to drill a hole in the ceiling, and then screw in the anchor bolt until it stops, onto which the chandelier is hung.

Please note that the anchor bolt must be inserted all the way, only then is there a guarantee that the structure will not fall to the floor one day!

How to attach a chandelier to the ceiling without a hook

If you did not find a hook included with the chandelier, it means it is attached using a special mounting plate. Such a bar can be purchased without much difficulty at any hardware store. The price will not surprise you, since such devices cost very little.

If you replace a chandelier with a new one, then the old one will leave a hook in your ceiling. Be sure to remove it before installing the strip.

Attaching the chandelier strip to the ceiling

After you have removed the hook from the old chandelier, you need to move on to installing the metal strip.

You can set the bar in several steps:

  1. Drill two holes in the ceiling;
  2. Drive dowels into the holes;
  3. Insert self-tapping screws into the bar and screw them into the dowels;

After this, the metal strip is completely fixed to the ceiling, but further work on installing the chandelier may require an assistant, since if you are installing a chandelier for the first time, you may not be able to do it alone.

Don't neglect using quality dowels. Thanks to them, the fastening becomes stronger, which means greater safety in the room.

How to hang a chandelier from the ceiling

After you have secured the hook or bar to the ceiling, figured out the structure of your chandelier, perhaps even looked educational video, it's time to move on to installation.

As we noted above, it is best to find an assistant who, during installation, will hold the chandelier in his hands at a convenient distance for you, and then help move it to the wiring.

While the assistant is holding the chandelier, you need to:

  1. Connect the chandelier wires to the wiring;
  2. Install the protective cap;
  3. Securely secure the cap with a screwdriver.

Before you start attaching the chandelier, make sure once again using the wall switch that the electricity is turned off.
