DIY raincoat fabric awning. Advice from experienced craftsmen for independently erecting a high-quality awning

Today you can buy tourist tents the most different forms and sizes, but you can sew it yourself. And the point is not that it will be half the price, but that you can sew an awning to suit your needs and do exactly what you need. Well, I just like to do everything myself, because the process itself is interesting. And today we will talk about how to sew a camping awning with your own hands.

The first thing you need is to find a suitable fabric. IN small towns this can become a serious problem. You don't often find travel fabrics in stores. I had a hard time finding green, as I was told, “tent fabric” without a name. Most likely it was an Oxford. Price 75 rub. per linear meter was more than attractive and I bought 8 meters. Fabric width 1.5 meters. If you sew two pieces of 4 meters each, it will work out just fine awning 3x4 meters, which is what I need.

Please note that in stores the fabric is often not cut, but rather torn from the roll along the fibers. But the weaving of the threads in the cut does not correspond to the parallel-perpendicular axes of the roll. This way, the torn edge of the fabric will not be perpendicular to the side of the cut. And, if you need the exact geometry of the product in finished form, take the fabric with a margin of at least half a meter and cut it strictly at right angles.

I cut my piece of fabric in half. Along the edges there is a strip with punctures and deformation of the fabric, which remains during production. All this needs to be cut off, at least from those sides that will be sewn together in the middle of the awning. If the fabric has a front side, then we fold the two pieces face to face. The bottom layer should protrude 5-6 millimeters from the top.

We wrap these 5 millimeters up and stitch them on a typewriter.

Then we bend the top layer towards the seam, as if unrolling an awning. And we sew so that the line goes along the edge of the wrapped strip, retreating 2-3 mm from it. For convenience, you can turn the awning over and sew from the wrong side.

The seam must be treated with some kind of impregnation so that it does not allow water to pass through. There are different recipes for self-breeding, but you can also use store-bought products.

Now you need to process the perimeter of the awning. We turn the fabric from the front side to the wrong side by 5 millimeters, then stitch it again in exactly the same way.

To make it easier and faster to install the awning, I decided to sew loops around the perimeter. I don't like eyelets in this regard. Over time, they tear out under good load. The places where the hinges are attached need to be strengthened. To do this, I cut 6x6 cm squares from thick leatherette and sewed them into places under the loops.

Then I cut identical pieces of tape used to hem the trousers, folded them and ironed them a little to fix the shape. All that remains is to sew the loops onto the squares around the perimeter of the awning.

That's basically it. The tent is ready and you can try it out on your next trip.

The tent turned out to be approximately 1.4 kg. weight, which is quite comparable to some store models. 600 rubles spent. with a little (2015). Time-wise - several hours of cutting and sewing. The result, I think, is very good, except that I would like to make the weight a little less.

An awning with this arrangement of loops can be easily installed

Awnings are used for many purposes. With their help, they protect the car from rain during the warm season. An awning over the porch makes the house cozy and attractive. Every summer resident dreams of building a tent over a picnic area.

A tarpaulin awning can be assembled in a matter of minutes.

First, we’ll tell you about a do-it-yourself awning for inexperienced builders.

We quickly build simple and reliable awnings

You can make the simplest portable tent from thick fabric in a few hours. Tarpaulin is ideal. Metal rings must be sewn along the perimeter at a distance of 35-45 cm. The places where the rings are sewn are reinforced with square patches. They are made from thicker fabric. The diameter of the rings can be from 5 to 8 cm. This will allow you to easily attach the mobile tent to the trees. If there are no trees, use wooden stakes 180 cm high. The stakes are tensioned using a rope, like a tent. To prevent the fabric from sagging, a support is installed in the center - a stake 2 m high. Its top must be made smooth so as not to tear the fabric. You can simply wrap the top end with tape or pull the bottom from the peg onto plastic bottle suitable diameter for a tight fit. We also make the center of the fabric compacted.

An original tent from the sun and summer rain is made from two PVC pipes and a regular shower curtain.

A shower curtain awning will provide good protection from rain and sun.

Pipes 6-7 m long should be bent in the form of arches. Two opposite edges of thick oilcloth must be covered with fabric loops. Now the canopy can be pulled over both pipes and the structure can be installed in tension.

Do you want to give fabric covering awning water-repellent properties and make your canopy reliable protection from the rain? You can do without buying special fabric, but make it yourself. Choose one of 3 methods:

  1. Dissolve casein glue (250 g), lime (12 g) in water (750 ml). In a separate bowl, make a soap solution - 15 g of laundry soap per 1.5 liters of water. Pour soapy water into the first solution. Soak the fabric and dry completely.
  2. For cotton or linen fabric, take gelatin (125 g), laundry soap (125 g), alum (300 g) and dissolve it in 8 liters of water. The mixture is brought to a boil with constant stirring. The fabric is kept in the solution for 2 hours and dried without twisting.
  3. For 3 liters of water you need to take 100 g of baby soap, heat the solution to 50° and soak the fabric in it for half an hour. Then soak the material in a 10% solution of potassium alum twice for 20 minutes. After the first and second immersion, the fabric should be rinsed in cold water and dry at the end.

Each of the impregnation options makes ordinary fabric waterproof.

Tent for more experienced builders

It is easier than other structures to attach an awning to an existing wall of a house or fence. First of all, we choose a place, prepare the territory and make all the necessary calculations.

Attention! Calculate your strengths first, do not take on complex construction stationary awning, without experience. You can make a good awning on your own only if you have a detailed drawing.

It's no secret that a car trailer awning made from high-quality modern material, has characteristics such as durability and good resistance to any temperature. Neat, most importantly correct operation helps extend the life of such coating up to 15 years. After the expiration date, more precisely, 10–12 years, signs of wear appear on the fabric, which are manifested by a lack of former elasticity and strength. It is worth noting that it is very difficult to buy a factory awning that would fit perfectly under the frame. In order to purchase the “correct” awning that will fully satisfy all the owner’s requirements, one should take into account the fact that the areas where the fabric comes into contact with the metal rods of the frame must be additionally sealed, which will allow for a tighter fit. No manufacturer of standard coatings will be able to correctly calculate the distance between the posts without measuring the specific trailer. In such a situation, there is only one true solution - to make an awning for the trailer yourself.

Choosing material for a quality awning

When a car owner confidently decides to sew an awning with his own hands, he must first of all pay attention to the material from which he plans to cut the product. Many factors depend on the choice of material; in particular, it is this aspect that will determine the attractive appearance and service life.

Today there are a huge number of products on the market that are perfect for making an awning. Most often, awnings for passenger car trailers are made from reinforced materials, which are equipped with an additional coating on one or both sides of a substance such as polyvinyl chloride. Thanks to this synthetic material, the cargo stored in the trailer is reliably protected from various types of precipitation.

The basis for this material is dense polyester fabric, which, on the one hand, protects from snow and rain, and on the other, perfectly retains heat.

If a car owner wants to personally sew an awning that would have the lowest cost, you can purchase material such as tarpaulin. Even though he is not attractive appearance, its main advantages are strength and high degree moisture resistance.

Awnings for car trailers can also be made from other materials, the more modern of which are special membrane fabrics that can withstand various loads (wind). In addition, using such fabric even an awning of a non-standard size. Tarpaulin, which is a durable polyethylene laminated fabric, the advantage of which is excellent waterproofing, is considered a good material.

Before purchasing a pre-selected material, you should find out about indicators such as thread thickness and strength, indexed by the dtex number (determines the weight of 10 km of thread). In view of this, it is better to buy the fabric that will have larger number dtex, which will indicate the maximum strength and thickness of the thread.

Secondly, you need to pay attention to the tensile strength of the material, the number of possible bends and tensile strength. In addition, it is important to know about the color fastness, adhesion and fire resistance of the fabric you purchase.

We create an awning with our own hands

Making an awning for a trailer is not a very labor-intensive process, as car owners may think. Almost anyone can make a high-quality awning; you just need to first study the features that relate to cutting and sewing the frame. The car enthusiast only needs to be patient and have the necessary materials, which should include:

  • roulette;
  • several sheets of white paper;
  • a simple pencil;
  • scissors;
  • standard sewing machine;
  • needles and threads;
  • construction hairdryer

So, let's look at step-by-step instructions that will turn a complex process into an algorithm of simple actions.

When will they be available? necessary materials and tools, you need to take measurements from the trailer. First you need to measure everyone general sizes, on which the pattern of the future product will be based. It is important to make a pattern with additional overlaps; if the material is cut according to the measurements taken, it will not be possible to ensure a loose fit.

It is necessary to measure the right, left and rear sides one by one. Convenience can be ensured by plotting the measurements on paper. It is advisable to draw separately all the components of the trailer and indicate the dimensions of those segments to which the covering will be attached in the future. Depending on the length of the device, the distance should not exceed 300 mm.

Making an awning for a trailer requires extreme care; you need to correctly measure the height of the side and the frame, which protrudes a few centimeters on the sides of the unit. To correctly cut the material, you need to take into account the width of the top and the side of the base.

The last measurement should be to determine the distance from the beginning of the frame to the end point of the body. The measurements are applied to a schematic drawing, the outline of the awning is applied to the material, then the components of the entire structure are cut out of it one by one.

The strength of the future device will be added by special linings made of the same material. They need to be located in those places where there is greater tension, as well as contact with the rods of the metal frame.

Sewing the product

Making awnings for passenger trailers requires attention and the presence of correctly measured and neatly cut parts. All awnings are assembled together from several separate pieces, folded at the edges and stitched with two seams spaced 14 mm from the edge. The threads that will be used in sewing must be as strong as possible. Nai the best option- reinforced threads made on the basis of polyester. This kind of thread can withstand frequent use, is resistant to stress, cleaning from leaves, dirt and snow.

If the car owner does not have the skills to use sewing machine, you can resort to soldering the parts of the awning with a construction hairdryer, which can qualitatively connect individual pieces of material.

Methods of fastening the awning structure

The material for the trailer awning provides several mounting options. The car owner can resort to the following methods:

  • attach the manufactured structure to the main body using metal rings;
  • create eyelets by placing them along the edges of the fabric;
  • pull a cable or rope through the rings located above the general structure.

The lugs must be removed by 200 mm, in addition, all rings must be equipped with fasteners.

How fastening element cable and rope can be used. Regardless of the method of fastening, the retaining element must consist of a single piece, the edges of which are reinforced with metal tips. When securing the awning, the retaining device must pass through the rings and be tightly stretched.

Conclusion

From all of the above, it becomes clear that making a trailer awning is within the power of anyone who wants to create a reliable shelter for their own trailer and the cargo transported in it. The main thing in this matter is to do it correctly, on which the density and service life of the finished product will depend. Do not neglect correct cutting and compliance with all the above rules.

Canopies + gazebos + awnings and tents are very convenient structures for relaxation. They can be installed permanently in a country house, countryside, park, summer camp, or serve as a one-time use for any event.

Design Features

Tents are sets of supports of different designs, onto which, after installation, awnings made of tarpaulin, fabric or film are stretched.

Advantages of choice

  1. Even one person can cope with the installation of such a structure with his own hands.
  2. When disassembled, the device does not take up much space. Thanks to this, it can be stored in a barn or other utility room.
  3. There are also no problems with transporting the structure. Tent small size fits in the trunk of a car.
  4. High-quality gazebo awnings can withstand heavy rains and strong winds.
  5. On this moment manufacturers make designs that have the most different sizes- from small buildings for a couple of users to spacious pavilions that, for example, can accommodate all the guests of your wedding. There are also tourist models and analogues for fishermen and hunters.

Note! When installing a tent, please note that the ease of disassembling/assembling it, as well as mobility, is ensured due to the lightness of the structure. It is usually secured with ropes and long pegs, just like tourist tents. The second method of fastening is to use a tree as a support or anchor for the structure.

Types of structures

Often, simple summer residents are confused about the terms “tent” and “awning”. The first concept means a device made of rigid supports.

An awning is a protective canopy made of fabric or film. Previously, tents could even serve as camp houses. Now this is the best option for a collapsible gazebo.

At the moment there are 4 types of tent structures.

  1. Tent tent. This compact and lightweight structure is usually supported by quadrangular frame.
  2. Gazebo tent. A very common option, produced with the most different numbers walls It has a lot of additional amenities and elements. For example, replaceable mosquito nets, windows, partitions. This “three in one” structure: gazebo + awning and tent, is suitable for use even in mild winters. Then the lightweight mesh is replaced by solid-type walls with wind protection.

  1. Tourist tents are more compact. Their purpose is to protect travelers from the vagaries of the weather. They usually have wind braces.
  2. The most spacious structure is a tent-pavilion. It can be used to organize crowded various events.
  3. Industrial structures use special synthetic fabrics. For example, from polyester fibers. To increase the wind resistance of the canvas, it is reinforced with polyurethane threads.
  4. Gazebo awnings must be impregnated with water-repellent compounds. This allows them to be used in rainy weather.
  5. Product frames are made of aluminum, steel, fiberglass.

Manufacturing materials

Note! Often, cheap structures are not particularly reliable. Based on this, if you want to use a tent gazebo for many years, do not skimp on its quality. Even though the price of the structure will be relatively high, you will ensure comfort for a long time.

How to build an awning gazebo yourself

A structure erected on your own will not only decorate the site, but will also protect your family and guests from the hot sun on a summer day and give you the opportunity to enjoy the coolness of the evening. Besides, original gazebo from the awning will complement the surrounding landscape.

First technology option

  1. You will need guides and rack supports with a length of approximately 2.5/3 m. The material for these elements can be rolled steel, metal pipes or wooden beams.
  2. First, dig four holes in the corners of the future structure, about 50/70 cm deep. Install racks in them and secure them. Connect them with jumper guides.
  3. To give the structure a greater level of strength, it is best to not just dig the pillars, but fill them with concrete.

  1. Next, you can mount the roof frame. It can be either sloping or flat. The first option is preferable, because it will allow raindrops to roll off the awning without any problems.
  2. To assemble the roof base, you need to connect 5 guides. Four of them will serve as the frame itself. The fifth pipe will become the supporting point in the center of the structure.
  3. Before sewing an awning for a gazebo, choose a material for it.

  1. The best option is to purchase a tarpaulin or thick waterproof fabric. Please note that the canopy can be made so that it covers not only the roof frame, but also the walls of the gazebo.

Another way

  1. First, select the material for the frame of the structure. It can be timber, aluminum, steel pipes or thick reinforcement or ready-made supports-racks with a factory fixing system.
  2. Next, mark the construction site. For this purpose, use stakes to mark points for future supports.
  3. After this, dig holes at least 50 centimeters deep. When the supports are installed, fill the holes with damp soil and compact them well. If the tent is large, then it is better to concrete the poles.
  4. Next, wait until the soil on the awning gazebo supports settles or until the concrete dries.
  5. Then begin installing the cross beams. Mount the side clamps on the supports, then insert the guides into them.
  6. Bring the crossbars together in the center of the frame and secure with a special centering tool.
  7. When there are no such parts in the structure of the structure, the beams can simply be fixed at the corners on the frame. Before installing the awning, make sure that the structure is secure.
  8. Then tension the roofing material.

Note! Before sewing an awning for a gazebo, please note that in addition to the traditional fabric analogue, you can also use modern version. For example, it could be polycarbonate.

  1. In this case, the frame will need to be made 10/15 cm smaller than the covering sheets. For support posts, it is best to choose aluminum pipes.
  2. If the awning has a rounded shape, steel pipes will be needed for the roof frame. They are fixed to the supports using bolts and angles. Polycarbonate plates are attached to them with self-tapping screws.

  1. For an arched type analogue you need metallic profile, having a large length. One side of the post digs into the ground and is attached at an angle of forty-five degrees. Fix the other side in the same way at a point prepared in advance. This way you will get an arch shape. For strength, secure the sides at a height of 1/1.5 meter.
