What are bath bombs used for? All about bath bombs

The topic of bath bombs has come up again, and I wanted us to have an article on our website that contains everything helpful information. I’m not at all an expert in bombs, so I’ll tell you everything I know, and at the end of the article I’ll offer an interesting way to supplement my knowledge.

Recipe

  • 4 parts baking soda
  • 2 parts citric acid
  • 2 parts filler

What are parts? One of the most frequently asked questions. The part can be anything, from a spoon to a bucket: you decide for yourself in what volume you will make bombs.

I usually take a level tablespoon and do it in double volume (8 tablespoons of soda, 4 tablespoons of lemon, etc.). This amount is enough for two bombs and there is still a little left.

What kind of filler? Great question! This is anything dry: milk powder or cream, sea salt, cocoa, clay, ground herbs, fruit powders, in short, any powdery things. You can choose one thing, or you can mix several at once.

It is worth remembering that if the selected item is heavy (for example, salt), the bomb will settle to the bottom, if it is light (for example, milk powder) it will float on the surface.

But this is not the whole recipe. Once you have mixed all the above ingredients, you have two options:

    Oil method

    Dyes: I paint with mother-of-pearl or fat-soluble dyes. I pre-dissolve both of them in oil. Many people first paint soda with food coloring, let it dry for a day, and then make bombs from this soda.

    Essential oils and fragrances: Everything is clear here, essential oils are a smell and benefits, fragrances are just a smell, but often much more pleasant. We add as many fragrances as we want (for example, up to 20 drops per bomb, if you still need some kind of limit), handle essential oils carefully and read the recommendations on the percentage of input in the product cards.

    All sorts of things for decoration: roses, dried flowers, etc. Such nonsense is usually placed at the bottom of the sphere. Sometimes a toy or soap is hidden inside the bomb - this is a kind of kinder surprise.

    Coconut sulfate: Needed in order to get a bomb with foam, up to 20%, if I’m not mistaken, is added to the total weight (count 2 parts too).

    Borax: They say it increases the hissing. I’ve never tried it myself, that’s why I bought it, that’s why I’m selling it.

    Storing Bath Bombs

    • Bombs should be stored away from high sources of humidity: bathroom, kitchen, washing machine.
    • To store bombs, choose a place that is as dry as possible: for example, next to heating appliances.
    • Place a bag of silica gel in the box with the bombs (you can take it from any package, for example, with shoes). You can try adding cat litter to the box; it also absorbs moisture well.
    • Pack the bombs in cling film or shrink wrap as soon as they are completely hardened.

    What to do if the bombs didn’t turn out well at all and you want to give up everything and go to bed?

    Crush them into crumbs, mix with sea salt and call them “fizzy bath mixture.”

    Now comes the fun part!

    Let us all share our experience of making bombs in the comments so that we can get the most complete and informative article possible.

    Good idea?

    Comments:

    • Tell me what to do if after adding citric acid to the mixture everything starts to sizzle? In the morning the bomb spreads all over with white dots? Doesn't hiss or bubble? I make it according to the recipe: 2 tbsp soda 1 salt 1 lemon 0.5 oil dye a couple of drops and fragrance 20 drops what’s wrong? I did it and the same thing happened with alcohol...

      Good day! I made a bath bomb, everything was fine, but over time I noticed stains on it, darker than the bomb itself (the bomb was white and pink). I added the “Strawberries and Cream” flavoring, maybe that’s the problem?
      The stains don't look like mold, I don't know what it is. Tell me, please, what could be the problem?

      Super article!!! Thanks a lot. I learned a lot of new things and in general everything is explained clearly)))) Please help. I used the oil method, using linseed oil. Everything worked out, and they molded well and held their shape and did not fall apart. Just great. But the trouble is, I didn’t have time to pack it, I had a lot to do, they stayed with me for two weeks. Just on a pallet in the room. No draft or dampness. But yellow spots began to appear and the smell of old oil appeared, so bitter bad smell. What should I do? Please advise to avoid this problem in the future.

      And I saw this advice in a YouTube video: mix liquid ingredients (oil, flavoring, alcohol, Tween, dye...) with English salt. Now I only do this. Bombs have never failed before. Be sure to grind the salt and acid in a blender - the mass forms perfectly even without liquid. And I paint according to my mood, if you paint soda separately, the color will be more even, but you need to prepare a separate mixture for each color...More good advice: do not make the mixture in large portions, then it does not have time to dry out and the bombs will not fall out. Regarding the proportions: if I do it in parts, then everything works out great, but when I tried to convert it into grams, it turned out to be some kind of nonsense...

      I’ll also write a few “observations”)) it’s very cool to add fruit powders to bombs)) but never mix them with dry milk or cream, and use less starch, otherwise the color will be eaten away. I always use Tween, and by the way, it is not a chemical, but a natural product, and like any component it works well without harm when used wisely.

      I fought with bombs for 2 years!!! Yes, that's a long way. For myself, I chose the oil method with TWIN 80. I first paint soda (even with pastes), literally rubbing the dye into the soda (I do this with the handle of a wooden rolling pin) until a perfect, uniform color. I let it dry. I grind all the ingredients into flour. Dry cream is used as a filler. When the ingredients are finely ground, the mass itself becomes very dense. I fill the molds well and voila! It is important to monitor the humidity - so that there is no drying laundry, cooking food or rainy weather. Then everything is fine 👌 dries!

      Hi all! I have for a long time Bombs didn’t work out, there was always the same problem - the mixture was in a bowl of the required consistency, I put it into the mold, everything seemed to be fine, but after a few minutes the bomb began to swell right in the mold. After reading several groups, I saw one piece of advice - take the bomb out of the mold immediately and put it to dry. I repeated it. The bombs “melted” and swelled even while drying. I decided - I won’t give up until I get a normal, adequate bomb)) I started to completely follow the process. Previously, I would drop the dye and fragrance and immediately start mixing, but now I dropped the dye and waited a little. I look - a small reaction begins, which means it’s all about the dye. I took another pinch of soda, quenched the reaction, quickly stirred and voila - it was a bomb! So, after analyzing the whole situation and understanding the problem, I started making bombs))

      After I made my own soap for the first time, I wanted to try bath bombs. I have this recipe: 10 tablespoons of baking soda, five tablespoons of citric acid. sea salt two tablespoons dye essential oil about 20 drops Olive oil one spoon one spoon of dry cream. Mixed it all, sprinkled it with water and morning it well in the mold. I got about three butterflies. They bubbled the water very well, there was a very pleasant aroma, but after a while one of the bombs fell apart. After that I tried again other recipes but they didn’t work out for me. Maybe I’m doing something wrong or it was humid there at that time, I didn’t know how to store them because I wanted to do everything at once.

      I had a long war with bombs, and in the end I found the optimal recipe for myself:
      4 tbsp soda, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp sea salt, 1-3 tsp base oil, add by touch until the mass becomes sufficiently moist and strong when compressed. I don’t grind Inga 🙈 I buy small lemon and fine salt. When making it, I first mix lemon juice, salt, base oil and fragrance, and soda and dye in a separate container, then combine and rub with my hands. I immediately take the bombs out of the mold, put them on a towel covered with napkins and place them next to a radiator (or a fan heater, also known as a heater, or in the oven at 60 degrees) because it’s super humid here))

      At first there were bombs. They bubbled well, were stored, and smelled good.
      But, probably because of the weather, the mass began to crawl out of the spheres. Then I put them in the refrigerator. But they began to fall apart. Then I took electrical tape and wrapped the sphere where the two halves touched. Now nothing comes out and everything dries out.
      And to prevent the bomb from breaking in half, I sprinkle it with additional alcohol before putting the halves together.
      And when it gets really humid, I take a bag, fill it with bath salts, put a bomb in it and tie it.
      From time to time I turn on the herb dryer (isidri) and put bombs there on a special tray. But few people have dryers.

      I use oil in bombs and always mix the mixture with my hands, I grind it, you could say, it seems to me that the dye and all sorts of additives mix more evenly and this method seems to me faster than, for example, stirring with a spoon) And at the end, when I take the bomb out of the sphere and it It will dry for about a day, I take an ordinary metal nail file and use it to process the edges of the bomb, erase the “rim” that appears when you compact the bomb (you can take any other nail file in the store, the cheapest one) I rub this place with a nail file and the bomb becomes perfectly smooth!

      I don't have much experience in making bombs. But I want to offer my own version of making bombs. To form, I take not a sphere, but plastic soap molds: peony, poppy. The mold, as I call it, looks very cool, day and night. On one half of the mold I place the light part (day) on the other half (night). Bombs freeze faster in molds. Easy to pull out.

      Hello! I had experience with bombs about 3 months ago. I saw a bath bomb in the store, it interested me, I decided to buy it. when I was in the store there were bombs only with floral scents, to which I am allergic, but fortunately I found one with coffee) initially the bomb seemed like an expensive pleasure to me. it cost about 80 rubles for a small ball, which stops bubbling in 2 minutes. and I decided why someone can make such fizzy drinks, but I can’t.? and I started reading all the articles on making bombs. Luckily for me it turned out to be very easy! I bought everything and decided to make my first bomb! I have everything in stock, I start making it and then the fun begins...... when I added all the ingredients to a dry container, I got my hands dirty and decided to wash them, but why did I need to wipe them? I reached into the mixture for the bomb with damp hands...... it all started to boil, but I wasn’t scared and continued. I placed the dry mixture in a metal muffin tin and began to wait. I put the form in the room to dry overnight. when I woke up I saw that something was wrong with my bomb. I got a real cupcake. The bomb has grown! but my adventures did not end there. the bomb didn't want to come out of the mold! but I didn’t despair and dropped it straight into the bathroom with my uniform. This was my experience in making bombs. I made the next one in a mayonnaise bucket. the bomb was bubbling well! good luck to all! and great mood!

      Hello! I had an experience with the bomb about 2 months ago. Then the cooking process seemed very complicated to me! And one day I finally decided to make them, I prepared all the ingredients: soda, citric acid, dyes, fragrances, oil and sea salt (then I didn’t know that bombs with sea salt settle to the bottom and sizzle there)! I mixed everything and went a little too far with the oil! The mass was very oily and didn’t want to stick together, so I decided not to make bombs anymore! But recently in live Natasha shared a wonderful recipe for bath bombs! I decided to make it using the alcohol method, the bombs turned out very cool, all my loved ones really liked it. This is my experience with bombs! Thank you so much for the recipe!!!

A warm aromatic bath can relieve fatigue after a hard day at work, restore strength and help you relax. To make water procedures as useful and enjoyable as possible, it was created a large number of cosmetics. Among them, bath bombs take pride of place. You can buy them in a store or make your own from simple ingredients. Most of the necessary tools for their manufacture are present in the kitchen of every housewife.

Why it's better to make your own bath bombs

The point of making such bombs with your own hands is not so much to save money as to real benefit for health and body skin. The same ones colorful balls, which can be found on the shelves of every large supermarket for little money, contain harmful substances and dyes. For small children and allergy sufferers, they can be potentially dangerous. The fact is that commercial bombs often contain soda ash, which is used to prepare quite aggressive cleaning products. Synthetic dyes and cheap substitutes for aromatic oils are also often used.

Of course, you can go to a natural cosmetics store and buy “geysers” made from high-quality raw materials. But such stores are not found in every city, and they cost quite a lot of money. They are produced mainly from inexpensive ingredients, and the price is often artificially high due to the name “natural”.

As you can see, there is a point to making bath bombs:

  • firstly, you will always know what you put there;
  • secondly, you save money and buy only ingredients for cooking;
  • thirdly, you have an excellent opportunity to get creative with the ingredients and use only those ingredients that suit you specifically;
  • fourthly, you can do with my own hands a great gift for a loved one.

Using dried rose flowers, you can make incredibly beautiful and fragrant bombs

Ingredients for making

There are many recipes for making homemade bombs, but most of of these begins with preparing the classic base. You will need the following components:

  • baking soda;
  • lemon acid;
  • base oil (olive, coconut, wheat germ oil, etc.).

Only two ingredients are responsible for the “gurgling” effect - soda and citric acid. Dissolving in water, they interact with each other and the well-known chemical reaction. Responsible for the aroma essential oils, flavorings, ground coffee, dried herbs and petals. Fillers with a caring effect are also used: potato or corn starch, dry cream or milk, sea salt. Color is provided by food dyes, colored sea salt, coffee, cocoa, etc.

Many recipes indicate that it is better to grind citric acid into powder. Since it is volatile and can cause irritation to mucous membranes, it is recommended to wear protective mask during grinding. The lid of the coffee grinder is also not opened immediately, but is waited for the caustic dust to settle.

Base oil is used as a bonding component. Without it, you won’t be able to make a bomb from soda, citric acid and fillers. In addition, it cares for the skin, nourishes it and moisturizes it. It is best to use wheat germ oil as a base oil. It is light, quickly absorbed by the skin and does not clog pores. You can also use other oils as a main or additional component: grape seed, almond, jojoba, macadamia, cocoa, sea buckthorn, etc.

For beneficial aromatherapy, it is better to use only high-quality natural essential oils. You can also use food and cosmetic fragrances, which can be purchased at soap stores.

It is not advisable to use mineral oils and synthetic essential oils. They often cause allergic reactions and can negatively affect your skin and health.

Water is used rarely and in small quantities, usually to make bombs with a small amount of oil. The fact is that under the influence of moisture, soda and acid immediately begin to interact and you risk ruining your creation at the very beginning. Water is added using a fine spray from a short distance. Large drops of water may cause a reaction and the bomb will not work.

These small bath balls are used as decoration.

Powdered cream and milk are added to soften the skin while bathing. Since they are undesirable for oily and problem skin, it is better to replace them with corn or potato starch. Sea salt saturates the skin with beneficial minerals and has a beneficial effect on the body as a whole. Also healing properties has clay (kaolin), which can be purchased at the pharmacy. Dried petals and herbs additionally saturate the water with aromas and turn bathing into a real pleasure.

Polysorbate (emulsifier) and foaming agent “Lush foam” can be found in a specialized store for preparing cosmetics. They are not required components. Thanks to polysorbate, the oil will not form a greasy film on the surface of the water and the walls of the bath, but will completely dissolve. A foaming agent will be needed to produce foam while the geyser bomb is bubbling.

Using the “Lush Foam” foaming agent you can make a foaming geyser bomb

Dyes are purely decorative. If you are afraid of allergies or you are simply against various “chemicals”, then you can do without them. The same petals, herbs, zest and coffee can give the bombs a beautiful color without harm to health. Never use pigments of dubious quality or not intended for cosmetics.

To paint bombs in the desired color, do not use artistic paints (gouache, acrylic, etc.). They can clog pores, stain your bathtub and body, and cause severe allergic reactions.

You won't need dyes if you add this colored salt to the mixture

In addition to the ingredients for cooking, you will also need:

  • bomb molds;
  • a small deep bowl (preferably glass or porcelain);
  • gloves;
  • a tablespoon for measuring ingredients and kneading;
  • beaker;
  • electronic kitchen scales;
  • coffee grinder or mortar for grinding;
  • fine spray (for water);
  • cling film.

You can buy a mold at a specialized soap-making store. There you can also find bath beads, fragrances for cosmetics and a foaming agent. Instead of special molds, you can use trays from chocolates, ice molds, pastry spoons for cutting out balls, muffin tins and much more. If you don't care appearance bombs, then make them with your hands like snowballs.

This is what happens when you put fresh or dried flowers at the bottom of a mold.

A coffee grinder and mortar will be needed to grind ingredients such as citric acid and sea salt. The smaller the components, the better their adhesion to each other. Gloves are used to protect your hands from burning while working. The fact is that citric acid in direct contact can irritate sensitive skin and cause a burning sensation in areas of abrasions, hangnails and wounds. But when taking a bath using such a homemade bomb, citric acid dissolves in a large amount of water and has no effect negative influence on the skin.

Since essential oils tend to “fade out” over time, each finished bomb should be wrapped in cling film or placed in a closed, airtight bag. Ready-made “pops” are stored in a dry place.

Bath beads can be used to beautifully decorate effervescent balls Can be used square shapes for ice Dried herbs will give the bombs a beautiful aroma, and cream will give softening properties. Use dried rose petals and herbs instead of dyes Instead of store-bought molds, you can use chocolate egg halves

How to make different types of bombs at home: recipes with photos

All recipes differ in the ingredients used, the desired effects and smells, as well as fillers (salt, petals, coffee, etc.). You can prepare “geysers” for children with a minimum amount of ingredients, without artificial colors and only with those essential oils that rarely cause allergic reactions.

Classic oil bomb without water

You can use starch or sea salt as a filler. Salt crystals are quite large, so they are first crushed in a coffee grinder or mortar.

The amount of ingredients is for 3 balls. You will need:

  • baking soda - 4 tbsp. l.;
  • citric acid - 2 tbsp. l.;
  • sea salt - 2 tbsp. l.;
  • base oil (from wheat germ or whatever you have) - 1 tbsp. l.;
  • flavoring - 10 drops;
  • liquid food coloring - 10 drops;
  • bomb mold.

If you wish, you can use an emulsifier, but then you need to take half a tablespoon of oil and the same amount of emulsifier.

Cooking instructions:

  1. Prepare all ingredients and put on gloves.

    First you need to mix citric acid, soda and salt

  2. Mix soda, crushed salt and citric acid.
  3. Add flavoring and coloring.

    Ingredients can be mixed using a broom

  4. Pour the base oil into the dry mixture, add lavender essential oil.

    Measure with a tablespoon required quantity oils and add to dry mixture

  5. Mix everything thoroughly until smooth.

    Essential oil is added directly to the mixture

  6. After preparing the mixture, you can start forming balls.
  7. Fill one half of the mold and compact well.

    Fill the mold with the finished mixture and press tightly with a spoon.

  8. Fill the other half and make a small mound.
  9. Connect the halves, pressing them tightly together.
  10. Let the product dry for an hour and then carefully remove the mold.
  11. Remove unsightly irregularities.
  12. Place the bomb on paper and leave to dry overnight.
  13. Store in a dry place, wrapped in cling film.

    The bomb can be placed in a plastic bag and tied with a cord

A properly prepared mixture should sculpt well and have the consistency of wet sand. Also, the bombs are not dried in the oven - this can cause them to crack and crumble.

Instead of flavorings, you can use essential oils, then the bombs will be more natural. In this case, you should also abandon emulsifiers and dyes. To color the mixture a beautiful color, use ground coffee, grated lemon and orange zest, crushed petals and herbs.

You can also make two-color and even multi-colored bombs. Simply divide the base mixture into parts and color in different colors. Fill the halves as desired. You can layer the mixtures to create striped balls, or simply fill each half with one color.

By combining colors you can make bright and beautiful “fizzies” for bathing.

If the bombs do not stick together well and fall apart, you can use ethyl alcohol to moisten the mixture. It is volatile, unlike water, it slowly reacts with soda and acid. Alcohol is poured into a fine spray bottle and the mixture is sprayed on.

Even a beginner can make these fragrant effervescent balls on his own. If you are doing this for the first time, it is better to add citric acid at the very end to minimize the risk of a chemical reaction.

Orange-grapefruit bomb with water, without starch and dry cream

The amount of ingredients is calculated to prepare one medium-sized bomb. You will need a fine spray bottle to add water. The amount of water indicated is approximate and you should see for yourself how much it will be needed to optimally moisten the mixture.

Water is added at a distance in single spritzes and everything is quickly mixed.

So, you will need the following components:

  • 2 tbsp. l. soda;
  • 1 tbsp. l. citric acid;
  • 1 tbsp. l. crushed sea salt;
  • 5 drops of grapefruit flavoring;
  • 5 drops of orange essential oil;
  • 5 drops of liquid cosmetic dye “Yellow”;
  • 5–7 drops of wheat germ oil;
  • 1 tsp. water.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Crush citric acid in a mortar.
  2. Mix the resulting powder with soda and acid.

    Mix soda, citric acid and salt with a spoon

  3. Add oils, flavoring and coloring.
  4. Mix the ingredients until smooth.

    After adding the dye, the mixture is thoroughly mixed

  5. Add water from a spray bottle and mix well.
  6. Fill out one half of the form and then the other.

    When filling the mold, you need to compact the mixture well.

  7. Compact everything tightly, and then connect the halves.

    Half filled ready-made mixture, tightly connected to each other

  8. Carefully remove the bomb from the mold and remove any bumps from the resulting ball.
  9. Leave the bomb to dry on paper for 24 hours.
  10. Wrap in cling film and store in a dry place.

    If you put a little oatmeal on the bottom of the mold, you get a very nice bomb.

For the first time, you can reduce the amount of ingredients by half. If you succeed, you can safely prepare a large number of flavor bombs.

Using bright dyes you can make these beautiful bombs

Fizzy hearts for children with white clay

Children love to bathe, especially with different beautiful-smelling bath products. But children's skin is very delicate, sensitive and more prone to allergic reactions. Therefore, this recipe does not contain harmful ingredients, artificial colors or fragrances. We suggest using heart-shaped shapes instead of traditional balls.

Lavender essential oil is perfect as a flavoring agent. It can be used from the first days of life, it has a calming effect, which is so important for your child’s sound, carefree sleep. As a base oil, take jojoba oil, which is good for the skin and does not cause irritation or allergic reactions.

For six hearts you will need:

  • baking soda - 15 tbsp. l.;
  • citric acid - 6 tbsp. l.;
  • sea salt - 3 tbsp. l.;

For coloring baby bombs Beautiful colors You can use natural dyes: turmeric, beet juice, carrots, spinach or blue cabbage. For older children, use food coloring if you are sure of its quality.

Bombs without citric acid

Many people are scared by the presence of citric acid in recipes. It is for those with hypersensitive skin and simply lovers of everything natural that we offer a recipe for preparing bombs without this component. It’s worth noting right away that such a bomb will not dissolve with the characteristic bubbling effect, but it is long-lasting and can be used several times if desired.

Take the following components:

  • soda - 1 glass (100 g);
  • dry cream - 1/2 tbsp.;
  • salt - 1/2 tbsp.;
  • olive oil - 1 tablespoon;
  • food coloring - 10 drops;
  • essential oils - 10 drops;
  • water in a spray bottle - 1 teaspoon.

Do everything as usual:

  1. Mix dry ingredients in a deep container.
  2. Combine oils in a separate bowl.

    Some recipes advise mixing oils separately

  3. Pour the oils and coloring into the base mixture and stir.

    This is the beauty you get if you put dried rose petals

  4. Dry naturally.

These bombs can be used to bathe children. We advise you to remove the dye and add chopped dried herbs (chamomile, chamomile) instead.

Vitamin geyser bombs without citric acid and soda

In some countries where many of our compatriots live, it is not easy to find regular baking soda and citric acid in stores. We suggest using effervescent vitamins instead, for example, the cheapest vitamin C.

These effervescent vitamin tablets can be used instead of soda and citric acid

So, you will need the following ingredients:

  • effervescent tablets - 100 g;
  • potato starch - 100 g;
  • cocoa butter - 30 g;
  • essential oil or flavoring - 5–10 drops;
  • food coloring - 5–10 drops.

Buy the necessary ingredients and get to work:

Here is a review from the creator of this wonderful recipe, who lives in Germany:

The recipe took a long time to come up, but the solution was found unexpectedly and simply. It turned out that finding baking soda and citric acid in Germany is not so easy. At first I settled on baking powder (almost the same soda) and thought that citric acid could be replaced with vitamin C and... and then it dawned on me! Vitamin C is sold in effervescent tablets (like the new aspirin) and not only that, but also calcium, magnesium, a multivitamin with all the variants of vitamins and much, much more useful and most importantly effervescent! And what is important is that here all this stuff is sold for pennies in any supermarket and pharmacy.

Clean plastic molds are filled as tightly as possible with the finished adhesive mass, after which the aromatic geyser is dried for about a day. heating batteries or under the sun.

You can talk at length about canons in design, but every day the existing canons are becoming less and less stable. Aesthetics and harmony, balance, colors, materials brought together in order to obtain such a long-awaited result are the essence of your knowledge, practice and self-development. My motto is to learn, see, touch something new every day, and I am sure that this is the only way to stay on the right course in “high design.”

A bath bomb is a mixture of soda, citric acid, filler and essential oils, allowing you to create a small SPA salon at home. Components dissolved in water make the skin soft and smooth, help fight cellulite, and essential oils have a beneficial effect on well-being and even help get rid of depression.

What's inside?

The main components of geysers are citric acid and baking soda. In their dry form, they are absolutely inert to each other, but as soon as a drop of water gets in, a whole action with bubbling and hissing takes place in the bathroom. At this time, the room is filled with the aromas of ethers, and particles of dry filler that are beneficial for the skin get into the water.

Soda and citric acid

We are well aware of baking soda, but not everyone knows about its effect on the skin. Sodium bicarbonate balances the acid-base balance of the body, restores metabolism, and improves the absorption of oxygen by the skin.

Citric acid is included in cosmetic products and is trusted to act as an acidity regulator. It successfully removes toxins and salts and improves immunity.

Sea salt

Sea salt is the most affordable filler for geysers. But I use it not because of its availability, but because of its ability to fight insidious cellulite. In addition, baths with sea salt have a positive effect on the condition of the skin, restoring its former smoothness and elasticity.

Oils: base and essential

Skin softening is provided by grape, olive, almond oil.

When making bombs, do not use ordinary sunflower oil, it dries out the skin.

Essential oils have an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect, promote regeneration, activate metabolic processes and have a beneficial effect on well-being.

Under the influence hot water essential oils are released from the bombs and create an inhalation effect.

Choosing essential oil:

Action Essential oils
Refreshing fir, spearmint, immortelle, tangerine, lavender, peppermint, orange, lemon
Stimulating coriander, nutmeg, lavender, immortelle, verbena, peppermint, hyssop, rosemary, cloves, lemon, juniper
Cleansing geranium, lemongrass, orange, nutmeg, rose, sage, lemon
Harmonizing geranium, marjoram, jasmine, mandarin, orange, mimosa, rose, sandalwood
Relaxing basil, galbanum, chamomile, immortelle, lavender, lemon balm, bigardia, mimosa, orange, sandalwood, cedar, vanilla
Calming dill, geranium, chamomile, jasmine, vanilla, bigardia, lemon balm
Strengthening lavender, angelica, nutmeg, lemon balm, rosemary, peppermint, cedar, lemon, verbena, vetiver
Anti-stress bergamot, geranium, galbanum, jasmine, patchouli, coriander, mimosa, lavender, bigardia

Additional components

You can add cosmetic clay, milk powder, starch, cocoa, coffee, chocolate, spices, dried flowers and plants to the bomb composition, oatmeal, pearls for baths.

Bombs can be used not only while taking a bath, but also in the process of preparing your hands for a manicure. In this case, I recommend adding grapefruit essential oil, black cosmetic clay and jojoba oil to them.

Methods for making bombs

Today there are two ways to make bombs: water and anhydrous.

The waterless method involves the use of soda, citric acid, filler and oils. But for the water method you will need water or a decoction of herbs. In this case, you will have to completely abandon the oils or reduce their amount by half.

Classic recipe

Required:

  • citric acid – 0.5 kg or 4 parts;
  • baking soda – 250 grams or 2 parts;
  • filler (milk powder, cosmetic clay, cream, corn starch, sodium sulfate, sea salt) – 175 grams or 1 part;
  • base oil – 1 tbsp. spoons;
  • water-based food coloring;
  • EO or flavoring – 6-10 drops;
  • Twin 80 – 1 tbsp. spoon;
  • D-panthenol – 1 teaspoon.

From the listed ingredients you will get about 20 bombs.

To color bombs, do not use pigments with glycerin, as they do not allow the mass to form and dry.

You can use food granules for baking, dried flowers, and coconut flakes as decoration.

Before making a bath bomb, prepare a mold of the appropriate size. This can be a special removable form made of, silicone baking containers or halves from a kinder surprise. If you plan to make mini bombs for manicures and pedicures, you can arm yourself with ice cube trays.

Cooking instructions:

  1. Grind citric acid in a mortar or using a blender, combine with dry milk and soda. Divide the dry base into parts depending on the number of types of bombs you plan to prepare.

  1. Add D-panthenol, oil, flavor (essential oils), Tween 80 to the mixture. When adding liquid dye, mix the mixture thoroughly. The result should be the consistency of wet sand.

  1. Place the chosen one in the mold, lay out the mixture and squeeze the parts together. Leave the structure to dry for several hours.

Do not dry “ammunition” on the battery, there is a high probability of cracks.

  1. It is better to store bombs in cling film, which will not allow them to dry out.

Cosmetic certificate. What is Twin 80? The substance belongs to the group of emulsifiers; it allows mixing water and oils.
In its absence, the oils from the bomb will float on the surface of the water and not envelop the body. Price – from 120 rub. for 100 ml.

Bomb secrets

  1. If your bomb refuses to form into a ball, there's a good chance you used too much liquid or oil. The situation can be corrected by adding dry components or briefly drying the battery.
  2. Do not use peach oil or apricot kernel. Such bombs almost always do not keep their shape.

  1. If you like butters (solid oils), first melt them in microwave oven or in a water bath.
  2. Depending on the ingredients used, the bomb can be stored from 2 weeks to 6 months.

A bath with a bomb is taken after a shower and cleansing the skin.

Whether you're shopping for bombs at Lush, The Body Shop or bubble balls at Stenders, you'll be tempted by natural oils, sweet scents and incredible colours. Salespeople will tell you how the bombs will hydrate your skin and relieve stress, but what will actually happen to your body?

Study the ingredients of the bombs. They contain chemicals that affect hormones and dyes that reach the mucous membrane. Standard bath bombs are definitely not something that will be good for your body. Luckily, we have a recipe for homemade bombs that will help relieve stress without harming your health.

1. Totally fake and toxic flavors

The aromatic fragrance added to the bombs does not seem to be a dangerous ingredient. But in fact, synthetic additives are the most toxic part of the product. Throwing a mango-scented bath bomb into the bathtub may result in a spilled puddle of oil without you even noticing it. However, your skin will receive all the dangers associated with this fact. For example, the likelihood of skin itching and allergies.

When studying the composition before purchasing, pay attention to “fragrance”, “fragrance oil”, “fragrance oil blend”. This is a legal way to hide the names of chemicals from buyers and manufacturers regularly use it. In total, manufacturers use 3,000 toxic flavors and do not indicate their names in the composition. Such flavorings may cause malfunction nervous system, respiratory diseases and are potentially carcinogenic ().

2. Food dyes get into the blood

Food dyes are dangerous in more than just food. A 2013 study found that skin can absorb toxic dyes, especially skin that has undergone hair removal. Once in the skin, dyes go directly into the bloodstream, instead of passing through the digestive system and being filtered by the liver, like other toxins ().

Dyes are regularly used in bath bombs. They may cause allergic reaction. Some studies suggest increased risk oncological diseases. This primarily concerns the yellow dye. ()

3. Urinary tract infection

Experts may note that showering reduces the risk of infection (), but bathing with a bomb seriously increases this risk. It has been proven that bubble baths and bombs touching the genitals seriously increase the risk of infection. ()

4. Glitter is made of plastic.

Many bath bombs contain glitter. These are tiny particles of plastic that do not decompose. After flushing, they will pass into sewer system and will eventually pollute the water. They are harmful to the ecology of the planet, and if this does not bother you too much, then they are not very useful for your skin and mucous membranes either.

5. Yeast Infections

First of all, this applies to women. The chemicals contained in the bombs can disrupt the natural pH balance of the female organs and increase the risk of yeast infection. ()

Are boric acid bombs dangerous?

Some stores promote bombs homemade containing boric acid. The advantage of this solution is the antifungal effect of the acid. It is used to treat some female diseases and treat fungus on the feet of athletes.

Unfortunately, the special European Commission found evidence that boric acid affects hormones. Its use is prohibited in Japan and Canada ().
