Heat guns for heating rooms. How to choose a diesel heat gun for heating rooms

Among the many heating devices, a heat gun can be said to stand apart. It is distinguished by its ability, in full accordance with its name, to solve the problem of heating a room quickly and efficiently, as well as its suitability for solving some other problems. Next, we will talk about the most practical type of these devices - electric heat guns, and at the same time we will learn how to choose them correctly.

What is an electric heat gun?

A heat gun is a heating device in which the heating element is blown with air using a fan. Contact with the heater causes the air temperature to rise, after which it enters the room in a powerful flow.

With a power of up to 2 kW, the heat gun may have a plastic body. This device is usually called a fan heater and is intended for domestic use. More powerful models are equipped exclusively with a metal body, which has the shape of a pipe. The latter circumstance gives the device a resemblance to a cannon.

The body of a high-power electric heat gun is made of steel sheet

When operating any heating device that is not equipped with a fan - a radiator or convector - the heated air spreads into the room due to convection. This process, firstly, is quite lengthy, and secondly, it is not able to cover a spacious object such as a warehouse or hangar: due to local heat loss, the slowly moving air has time to cool down before it penetrates into the remote corners of the room.

A heat gun works differently. By driving the air with a fan, it provides forced mixing, due to which the room warms up very quickly, and the heat spreads evenly even over a fairly large volume.

The heat from the gun spreads throughout the room thanks to the fan built into it

The disadvantage of a heat gun is that it makes noise when operating. Therefore, in residential premises with a standard area, the use of a convection heater will be more comfortable.

Heating a room is not the only function of a heat gun. Essentially, it is a large and powerful hair dryer, hence it can help with the following:

  • dry vegetables or fruits;
  • heat the polymer stretch ceiling so that it can be stretched, as well as roofing felt or other rolled roofing material to give it elasticity before laying it in cold weather;
  • dry the freshly laid plaster, screed or paint.

In addition, if you turn off the heater, the heat gun can be used as a fan.

Modern heat guns are equipped with protection against overheating. Many models have a controller and a connector for connecting an external temperature sensor, thanks to which the heater independently maintains the temperature in the room set by the user.

Along with electric heat guns, fuel heat guns are produced, in which heat is released by burning gas, diesel fuel, waste mineral oil and even solid fuel. But for a number of reasons, the electric option is the most convenient.

Advantages of electric guns compared to other types

This device benefits from the following:

  1. The design is extremely simple: a piece of wire made of a material with high electrical resistance is used as a heater. In fuel analogues, this role is played by a burner or nozzle that is more complex to manufacture, and in addition, a number of additional elements are used: in gas ones - a solenoid valve, in diesel ones - a fuel pump, filter and diesel fuel tank.
  2. A simple device provides several benefits at once: low cost, light weight, compact size and simple and inexpensive repairs.
  3. There is no exhaust or unpleasant smell.
  4. The noise level is relatively low since only the fan makes noise. In fuel heat guns, the burner also makes noise, and in diesel heat guns, the fuel pump drive also makes noise.
  5. An electric heat gun is safer: the user is not at risk of fuel leakage followed by fire or explosion. There is no open flame, which makes the device safer in terms of fire (if the power supply is not overloaded). There is also no need to fear poisoning from fuel combustion products. True, an electrical appliance becomes dangerous in conditions of high humidity, but only in its normal design. If the gun is specially designed for wet rooms, that is, it has a high class of moisture and dust protection, is connected with grounding and through an RCD, then the risk of electrical injury is reduced to zero.
  6. Unlike fuel analogues, the electric unit does not require refilling, therefore, it can operate for as long as desired without user intervention.
  7. Also, no maintenance is required, whereas analogue fuel heaters need to be periodically cleaned of carbon deposits, and in diesel heat guns the fuel filter also has to be serviced.
  8. The heater power can be adjusted within the widest range - from zero to maximum. Nozzles and burners of fuel heat guns are mostly designed for constant speed fuel supply, accordingly, it is impossible to reduce their power without loss of combustion quality. Modulated burners that appeared relatively recently allow power adjustment, but not as flexibly as electric heaters. In addition, such burners are much more expensive than conventional ones.

The statement about the practicality and convenience of electric heat guns is not a marketing ploy, it is quite reasonable. But the disadvantages should also be taken into account:

  1. High cost of electricity. Operating a fuel gun, even though some of the heat produced is removed along with the smoke, is still cheaper than an electric one.
  2. Dependence of power on the capabilities of the supply network. But in most cases these possibilities are not so great. The household electrical network is designed for a maximum load of 7–10 kW. And the point here is not only in the capacity of the electric cable: one of the users, who wanted to connect a 15 kW electric boiler in a private house, had to pay for the replacement of not only the cable, but also the transformer at the substation. A fuel-fired heat gun can, in any conditions, “produce tens of kilowatts of heat,” and it consumes electricity in very modest quantities - only to operate the fan.

Specifications

Electric heat guns are characterized by the following parameters:

  1. Maximum power consumption. For the most productive models, this parameter can reach 30 kW or more. In fact, this is the power of the heating elements (only a few tens of watts are spent on fan operation), and if we take into account that the efficiency of electric heaters is almost 100%, then this parameter can be equated to thermal performance. That is, we can assume that a heat gun that consumes 5 kW of electricity will also generate heat with a power of 5 kW.
  2. Partial power consumption. Indicated for devices with stepwise power regulation and means the power of one stage.
  3. Fan performance. This characteristic is linked to the power of the heaters. With a power of 1 kW, the fan usually operates with a capacity of 120 m 3 /hour, with a power of 3 kW - with a capacity of 300–320 m 3 /hour.
  4. Power consumed in ventilation mode. Insignificant value. For example, a fan with a capacity of 500 m 3 /h consumes only 30 W of electricity.
  5. Voltage. Models with a power of up to 5 kW are designed for connection to a 1-phase network with a voltage of 220 V. More powerful ones have a 3-phase design, that is, they operate with a voltage of 380 V.
  6. Rated current. Using this characteristic, you can determine whether the supply network can withstand the load from the heat gun. If the current rating is not specified, it can be calculated by dividing the power consumption by the voltage (I = W/U).
  7. Heating area with a ceiling height of 2.5 m. This is an approximate figure, which is calculated from the consideration that for heating every 10 sq. m of area at the specified ceiling height requires 1 kW of heat. That is, in the characteristics of a heat gun with a power of 5 kW, in the column “Heating area...” the value of 50 m 2 will be indicated. It should, however, be understood that these are very average data, because the value of specific heat loss, and it is on this that the energy consumption for heating depends, for different buildings with different volumes, glazing and wall materials can vary greatly.
  8. The temperature difference between the air flow at the inlet and outlet in the maximum heat output mode. This value depends on the power of the heaters. For the lowest-power devices it is 20–40 0 C, and a gun with a power of 18–20 kW can heat the air at 140 0 C.
  9. Maximum permissible continuous operation time.
  10. Minimum duration of pause between maximum sessions of continuous work. Typically, the maximum operating time and pause duration are indicated as a fraction. For example, the entry “24/2” indicates that the heat gun can work non-stop for 24 hours, after which it will be necessary to take a break for at least 2 hours.
  11. Dust and moisture protection class. It is designated by the letters “IP”, followed by two numbers: the first indicates the level of protection against dust, the second - against moisture. In the standard version, heat guns have a dust and moisture protection class IP
  12. Electrical protection class. All heat guns with a metal body have electrical protection class I: a grounding wire is connected to the body and other live parts, which is connected to the grounding circuit through contacts on the plug and socket.
  13. Dimensions.
  14. Weight. As already mentioned, electric heat guns are relatively lightweight. The 2 kW model in a plastic case weighs only 0.86 kg. A heater with a metal body with a power of 3 kW weighs 9 kg, and models with a power of about 20 kW weigh within 20 kg.

An important point: if the fan performance for any reason turns out to be less than the calculated one, the heat gun will often be turned off by the overheating protection system.

Main manufacturers

Electric heat guns are quite popular equipment, and accordingly, many companies produce them. The most famous include such manufacturers as Ballu, Zubr, Interskol, Inforce.

Ballu

This Dutch company has production capacity in Russia, therefore its products in our country differ not only in quality, but also in availability.

Ballu heat guns have a distinctive design, equipped with thermostats and vibration damping elements

An example is the Ballu BHP-P-3 heat gun.

The following can be said about it:

  • power is 3 kW (step adjustment is provided);

Timberk

Manufacturer from Sweden. The model most often purchased from us is Timberk TIH R2S 3K. Here is its brief description:

Cost: 3930 rub.

Master

The company is registered in the USA. Its products are extremely expensive. For example, the Master B 2 EEB model with a power of 2 kW costs about 5 thousand rubles. But this manufacturer has a range of heat guns for all occasions. Thus, the Master B 30 EPR device, with a power of 30 kW, has a pipe for connecting a flexible air duct.

The ability to connect a flexible air duct to the Master B 30 EPR gun allows you to heat several large rooms with one unit

Thus, if there is a network of air ducts, one heat gun can heat several large rooms of a factory or warehouse complex. Thanks to the chassis, the device is mobile. The cost of this “monster” is 71 thousand rubles.

How to choose an electric heat gun

Choosing a heater begins with selecting its power. It was said above that the characteristics of the device often indicate the heated area, but this data is purely for reference and cannot be trusted. Ideally, you should order a building engineer or heating engineer to calculate the heat loss of the building, which will help you select the power with sufficient accuracy.

If this is not possible, you can perform the calculation yourself using a very simplified method. One single formula is used: Q = (V x dT x K) / 860, where Q is the required power of the heat gun, kW; V is the volume of the room, m3; dT - the difference between the desired indoor and outdoor air temperatures during the coldest period of the year, 0 C; K is a dimensionless coefficient, which is adopted in accordance with the design features of the structure and the degree of its insulation for buildings:

  • built using modern energy-saving technologies (all enclosing structures are insulated with modern highly efficient thermal insulators, sealed windows with double-glazed windows are installed): K = 0.6–0.9;
  • built and insulated using traditional technologies and equipped with non-sealed windows of regular sizes: K = 1–1.9;
  • light with walls half a brick thick, single glazing and a simple roof, possibly with minor insulation (outbuildings, etc.): K = 2–2.9;
  • frame with single-layer cladding with boards or corrugated sheets and without insulation (hangars, warehouses): K = 3–4.

Calculation example

As an example, let’s calculate the power of a heat gun for a room in an ordinary house (assuming K = 1.4) with plan dimensions of 4x5 m and a ceiling height of 3 m. Let us set the condition that:

  • the heater will be used at an outside temperature of -5 0 C;
  • the temperature in the room must be maintained at +20 0 C;
  • temperature difference inside and outside dT = 20 – (-5) = 25 0 C.

The volume of the room will be V = 4 x 5 x 3 = 60 m 3.

Then the power of the heat gun will be equal to Q = (60 x 25 x 1.4) / 860 = 2.44 kW.

Heater type

Three types of heaters are used in electric heat guns:

  1. A spiral made of nichrome or other alloy with high electrical resistance.
  2. Tubular electric heater (TEH). This is the same spiral, only placed in a copper tube filled with sand.
  3. Ceramic plates. The same heating coil is embedded in the plate.

The first option - the spiral in its pure form - is the cheapest, but it has an important drawback: the metal heats up very much, so that dust burns on it, releasing an unpleasant odor.

The heating element and ceramic plate do not heat up as much, but they are not inferior to the spiral in performance, since they have a much larger surface area. Dust does not burn on them, but the price of such heaters is slightly higher.

Additional functions

Here's what else you need to pay attention to when choosing a heat gun:

  1. If you plan to move the device from place to place, you should choose a model with a comfortable handle. During operation, heat guns heat up quite strongly, so if there is no handle, moving the device will be very difficult.
  2. It is good if the device has tip-over protection. It usually takes the form of a spring-loaded lever protruding from the support base and connected to a switch. When the gun is in the correct position and its sole is pressed to the floor, the lever is recessed and the associated switch is in the “on” position. If the heater falls on its side, the spring will push the lever outward, as a result of which the switch will be switched to the “off” position.
  3. Protection against overheating is also very important, but modern heat guns are equipped with it without fail.
  4. Availability of filters. Models with filters are designed for use in very dusty rooms. It is important to remember to periodically change filters or wash them if using reusable products.
  5. Availability of an air humidifier. If there is no open container of water in the room, then relative humidity the air temperature decreases noticeably when heated.

This process occurs when using any heater, not just an electric one. It is due to the fact that the maximum amount of steam that can be in a certain volume of air depends on the temperature of the latter. Due to the low temperature, the air coming from the street contains little moisture. When it heats up, its ability to dissolve steam in itself increases, but the amount of steam remains the same and the air becomes, as they say, dry.

This air is unpleasant to breathe, it causes drying of the mucous membranes and skin, and also leads to wooden furniture and the finish is drying out. To eliminate this problem, some models of heat guns are equipped with an air humidifier - a device that quickly saturates the internal air with water vapor.

At the same time, let’s debunk another myth: none of the electric heaters, regardless of the principle of operation, leads to “burnout” or “burning out” of oxygen. The concentration of the latter can decrease only during the combustion of any fuel. Perhaps the legend about burning out oxygen is due to the fact that, as already mentioned, heated air, due to its dryness, can be unpleasant to breathe.

If the heat gun is intended to be used in a room with high humidity, you should choose a model with a splash-proof housing and dust- and moisture-proof switches.

Also convenient are devices in which the direction of air supply can be changed using blinds installed in the outlet.

Choosing a heat gun for the garage and cottage

When calculating the heater power for a garage, the K coefficient should be taken equal to 2.45 (average between 2 and 2.9), and for a summer house - 1.45, that is, as for a regular house.

Because the country house is a residential space with constant occupancy, a heat gun with heating elements or ceramic plates should be used here. They, as mentioned above, do not give off the smell of burnt dust.

For a garage where the user stays for a relatively short time, a gun with a heater in the form of spirals is also suitable. It would be good if it was equipped with rollover protection, since such incidents are especially dangerous in a garage: the direction of hot air after the gun falls will change and oil and gasoline can get into its area of effect. And since these substances are flammable, a fire is inevitable.

For a gun in a country house, it is highly desirable to have a humidifier. It can also be purchased separately.

An air humidifier can be replaced with a wet towel suspended on a stretched rope or a basin filled with water.

Economical heat guns

The high cost of electricity forces buyers to look for models that use this resource as rationally as possible. These are heat guns equipped with a thermostat. When the set temperature is reached, the device will turn off automatically; accordingly, exactly as much electricity will be spent on heating the room as needed.

Heat guns without a thermostat have to be turned off manually. The user does not always do this in a timely manner, so the heater, as a rule, even after reaching a comfortable temperature, continues to pump heat into the room, leading to unnecessary overheating, increased heat loss (we remind you, they depend on the difference in temperature inside the room and outside) and, accordingly, , to excessive energy consumption.

You can pay attention to heat guns with heaters of a special design, which, in comparison with conventional ones, provide higher heat transfer. These include, for example, RexWatt brand devices. They are equipped with a heater made in the form of a cylinder (the manufacturer calls it a nozzle). Thanks to this shape, the air passing through the gun has time to heat up to a higher temperature than in the case of a conventional heater.

The heating elements in RexWatt electric heat guns are cylindrical in shape

This feature, in turn, allows the use of a more efficient fan. If air is driven through a conventional heat gun with a power of 3 kW in a volume of 300 m 3 /h, then through a heater from RexWatt at the same power - 500 m 3 / h.

Thus, we can say that the RexWatt heat gun can replace two conventional ones, since it is able to provide circulation and, accordingly, distribute heat over an area twice as large as its conventional counterpart.

However, it should be taken into account that the heat itself does not increase any more - both in a conventional gun and in the model from RexWatt it is produced with a power of 3 kW.

A heat gun allows you to get by with one device where several radiators or convectors would be needed. At the same time, it can act not only as a heater, but also as a large, powerful hair dryer, which makes these devices very popular. By carefully studying the recommendations outlined above, you will be able to choose the most suitable model for yourself, using your funds in the best possible way.

From this article you can find out what features a 220V electric heat gun has and advice on choosing the optimal device, taking into account the main criteria: technical characteristics, the purpose of the heated room and the operating conditions it has, consumer reviews, prices and other parameters. The text contains an overview of the most popular manufacturers and models of electrical devices.

High-quality heating of large rooms: garages, basements and other spaces will be provided by electric heat guns connected to a 220-volt network. These devices have high rate power, thanks to which they are able not only to quickly dry and warm the air, but also to preserve the result for a long time.

An electric gun is a heating equipment with a mobile or stationary structure. These devices have industrial and household purposes.

The scope of their application extends to heating the following objects:

  • warehouse areas;
  • Living spaces;
  • garages;
  • construction sites;
  • production workshops, etc.

The assortment of modern stores includes devices designed for connection to three-phase and two-phase networks. Therefore, consumers have the opportunity to buy an electric heat gun 220V and 380V. Networks with two phases are widespread almost everywhere, mainly in city apartments. Their voltage is 220V. Three-phase communication options are used for recharge industrial facilities. In rare cases, private houses are powered from networks with a voltage of 380V.

Note! Electrical appliances are environmentally friendly and safe. Their operation is not accompanied by the release of exhaust gases and toxins. Therefore, it is permissible to use an electric gun to heat residential premises without a threat to human health.

Operating principle of a 220V electric heat gun

A heat gun, which is powered by electricity, has a simple principle of operation. It is a ventilation device equipped with an air heating function. In addition to standard devices, there are guns with infrared heating principle. Heat transfer in them is carried out through the use of infrared rays. Electric devices are designed for rapid heating of small areas. The exception is industrial electric heat guns, which have a high level of power and performance.

Standard products consist of the following components:

  • a heating element;
  • ventilation device;
  • temperature regulator.

Each of these components performs a specific function. The heating element comes in two types: tubular (TEN) and spiral. The first option is used much more often because it has a longer service life than the spiral. In addition, the heating element burns less oxygen in the process of heating the room.

The ventilation device generates air flows that pass through the heating element, and the thermostat regulates the room temperature. This component protects the structure from overheating. When the air temperature reaches the required value, the thermostat automatically turns off the power supply.

Choosing a heat gun: photos and prices of popular models

Electrical appliances can be used to heat small buildings that do not have the conditions for a full-fledged heating system or whose construction would be impractical. As an alternative, you can purchase a heat gun for your garage, workshop or utility room. It is able to provide the necessary level of heating in rooms where a person is from time to time.

In addition, electrical appliances are widely used in construction. With their help, you can effectively heat a construction site, as well as reduce the drying time of surfaces after finishing. The capabilities of electric guns will be useful during wet construction work.

On an industrial scale, the use of guns extends to premises that are often used by people, for example, shops, waiting rooms at train stations and airports, offices, etc. For example, the capabilities of the electric heat gun Ballu BKX-3 or Zubr ZTP-2000-M2 are sufficient for heating rooms with an area of 25 m². Any of these models can heat a pavilion, a small office or a living room.

Note! A power of 1 kW is enough to heat an area of 10 m².

The Ballu BKX-3 heat gun is often used as a heating device in rooms that are not constantly occupied by people.

Such objects include:

  • warehouse areas;
  • industrial premises;

How to choose a 220V electric heat gun according to technical parameters

The heat gun can be installed on any horizontal surface. If necessary, the structure can be moved. The device operates almost silently, which does not negatively affect the residents of the apartment or the working environment in the office. Its performance depends on the technical characteristics of the gun. To decide which heat gun is better, you should study its parameters.

Note! When you turn on your new gun for the first time, there may be a slight odor. This is considered normal. It will disappear during further use.

When choosing a heating device, you need to pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • power level;
  • the presence or absence of the ability to adjust power levels;
  • fan performance;
  • the speed at which the heated air flow leaves the structure;
  • outlet air temperature;
  • voltage in the electrical network;
  • number of operating modes;
  • fire safety level;
  • device dimensions;
  • degree of mobility;
  • decorative qualities;
  • noise level;
  • additional functionality.

How to choose an electric heat gun: calculating the optimal power

To decide which heat gun to buy for the garage, you should find out what power rating the design should have. This takes into account the size of the room. For example, if the dimensions of the garage are 4x6 m, you can find the desired indicator using simple calculations.

First, calculate the area of the room. In this case it is equal to 24 m². Experts recommend adding a small margin of 20% of this value to the required power indicator. The result is: 2.4x1.2 = 2.88 kW. This means that for the specified room the minimum power of the heat gun is 3 kW.

There is another technique. It allows you to get a more accurate result. It is advisable to use this option to calculate the power of an electric heat gun for a home. In this case, the formula is based not on the area of the room, but on the degree of thermal conductivity of the walls and the volume of the room.

First you need to get the indicators necessary for the calculations:

  1. Room volume (m³) – the area of the room is calculated and then multiplied by the ceiling height.
  2. The difference between the temperature outside and inside the room.
  3. Thermal conductivity coefficient of walls.

Table of thermal conductivity of materials:

Wall material Thermal conductivity coefficient
Surfaces with high-quality thermal insulation 06,-1
Double-row brickwork or wall with an average level of thermal insulation 1-2
Poorly insulated surfaces 2-3
Walls made of boards or corrugated sheets (hangars) 3-4

To understand which heat gun to choose, it is enough to perform the necessary calculations, taking the same garage as an example. Room volume: 4x6x3=72 m³. If the temperature outside the building is -20°C, and inside - 15°C, then the difference will be 35°. Taking 1 as the insulation coefficient, we get: 35x72x1=2520 kcal/hour. 1 kW contains 860 kcal.

The result must be divided by 860 kcal and the result is 2.93 kW. If we take into account that the power of the gun is taken with a reserve, then for such a room you will need a device with 3.5 kW.

Helpful advice! You should not buy a gun with a high power rating for your home. Such devices drive a strong air flow, so they will create a lot of noise during operation.

How to choose a heat gun: voltage and operating time

Operating voltage is another characteristic that requires attention. There are units on the market with a power exceeding 20 kW. To operate such structures, a three-phase power supply is required. electrical network, where the voltage is 380V. If you intend to purchase just such a heat gun for heating, you should definitely take care of replacing the wiring with a more powerful option.

Structures whose power does not exceed 7 kW can be powered from a 220V network, provided that the cross-section of the wires is designed for such loads. Before connecting a heat gun, it is advisable to calculate the optimal cable cross-section taking into account power and current. This avoids wiring and short circuit problems.

When choosing a heating device, it is also necessary to pay attention to the duration of uninterrupted operation. The device is not able to work for a long time without switching off, otherwise it will very quickly fail. For this reason, heat gun manufacturers mark the body with “24/1” or “24/2”. This means that the device is capable of working around the clock with a break of 1-2 hours, depending on the specified mark.

There are others specifications that affect operation. When selecting a device, you must pay attention to the level of noise exposure and the temperature range within which the gun can effectively carry out its work.

Note! The minimum operating temperature range for a quality device is 5-40°C.

Many users have already tested the capabilities of the TEP-3000K gun in practice and shared their opinions:

“Great gun. Among the advantages I would like to note the low price. The device operates almost silently and does not take up much space. Just right for a small room. I can’t say that a heat gun is an essential item, but such a thing would not be superfluous in the house. My husband periodically uses it in his garage, although we also took it for a bathhouse. When there is severe frost outside, preheating the premises is indispensable. Without this gun, it took almost the whole day to kindle the bath; with the device, a couple of hours is enough.”

Elena Prodaivoda, Moscow

“Using a Resanta welding machine in my garage. It’s cold to work in winter, so I decided to buy myself a heat gun from the same company. A little disappointed. My welding machine is good and of high quality. I didn’t think it would be any different with a gun. It is, of course, small and very quiet, but in fact it only heats the room poorly and consumes a lot of electricity. I don’t know whether the heat guns themselves are useless, or whether the model should have been more powerful. In general, I have it almost idle. Occasionally I use it to start the car engine.”

Stanislav Sidorenko, Ekaterinburg

How to make your own electric heat gun

You can make an electric device for heating the room yourself. The simplest design consists of a heating element, a fan and an electric motor. All this is hidden in a metal case. The most difficult stage is the development of an electrical circuit diagram. To avoid mistakes, you can use ready-made options that can be found on the Internet. Most often, in a circuit, thermostats and a toggle switch are connected in series. The circuit is closed on the electric motor and heating element.

Assembly technology of a simple design with a heating element

As a body for a future gun, you can take a piece of large-diameter pipe. Metal or asbestos-cement products are suitable for this. The size of the housing must be selected taking into account the span of the fan blades, which should cover one of the end sides of the device. A ready-made heating element can be purchased in a store or removed from an old boiler or stove. To operate, you will need a switch that breaks the circuit, a cable with three cores, a safety circuit breaker, and bolts.

Helpful advice! To make the body, you can also use improvised means, for example, a small metal tank, an old saucepan, a galvanized bucket. The main thing is that the structure has thick walls.

First, the required power of the device is determined. To do this, you can use the formula that was discussed earlier. After this, you need to check whether the wiring in the room can withstand such a load.

Next, the body part is made. If you don't have it at hand metal pipe, you can take a steel sheet. It bends into the desired position and is fixed using rivets, hoops or welding. If you intend to use a bucket or pan, you should saw off the bottom. The result should be a rectangular or cylindrical body.

Then the resistance of the heating element is compared with the calculated data. If necessary, you can add 1-2 to the chain additional element which are connected in series. To increase power, the heating element is shortened. An electric motor and a fan are fixed at one end. The blades should cover the gap as much as possible, but nothing should interfere with rotational movements. The network cables are connected via a fuse. A switch is also installed here.

The heating element must be fixed inside the housing, preferably in the center. Plates made of refractory metals or rivets can be used as fasteners. The heating element must be located at a sufficient distance from the fan, otherwise the motor will overheat. The wires should be taken out and connected to the network through another fuse.

The structure is completely ready. Before you start using it, you need to check the quality of insulation on all connections and perform trial testing. If the assembly is done correctly, a fan will start at one end, and heated air will come out of the other. Such a gun is very easy to manufacture and requires only time and minimal electrical knowledge, although it would be much safer to purchase a ready-made device in a store.

Task: quickly organize effective heating of a room in an electrified building, spending a minimum of money on heating equipment. The solution is a diesel heat gun of the required power, capable of raising the temperature of the cold air in the room in the shortest possible time. The problem of choice remains - before purchasing, you should familiarize yourself with existing species heaters, operating principles, advantages and disadvantages of various models.

Three types of diesel fuel heaters

Combustion of diesel fuel for space heating has been practiced for a long time. Just remember the air heaters of the OV-65 type, installed on military closed trucks of the Ural and ZIL brands. New diesel heat generators use a similar principle, only they are made from modern materials and equipped with electronic automation.

The predecessor of modern heating guns is a car diesel stove placed on a stationary frame

A solar heat gun burns diesel and heats the air driven through a cylindrical combustion chamber by an axial fan. By heating and ejection method flue gases products are divided into 3 groups:

  1. Directly heated guns emit smoke into a heated room. Accordingly, it is unacceptable to use such air heaters inside a home.
  2. Indirect heating heat generators are equipped with a side pipe for connecting the chimney and discharging combustion products to the outside.
  3. Infrared heating devices also pollute the air by emitting waste gases into the room. The difference from previous models is the increased area of the heating plate, which produces radiant heat.

Reference. Among the manufacturers of heat guns, we will highlight several proven brands: Master, Aurora, Ballu, Elitech, Zubr. The range of heating capacities of household units is 10...30 kW, industrial models of thermal guns develop a performance of up to 150 kW.

You can determine the type of heater by its appearance - indirect-acting devices are equipped with a chimney, and infrared devices are equipped with a large-diameter perforated reflector

Let's take a closer look at the design of each type of heater, then analyze their pros and cons.

Direct heating principle

A gun of this type consists of the following elements:

  • a cylindrical heater body and a diesel fuel tank are attached to a metal frame (usually equipped with wheels);
  • a combustion chamber made of stainless steel or ceramics is installed in the front part of the body;
  • on the back of the chamber there is a fuel injector, a glow plug and a photoelectric flame sensor;
  • There is a plate on the front side of the firebox that reflects open flame;
  • in the rear half of the case there is a fan - an air blower, a fuel supply system and an electronic control unit with a thermostat.

Note. The second function of the reflective plate is the transfer of radiant heat to objects located in the line of sight at a distance of 3-5 m.

Schematic diagram of a direct-flow gun - longitudinal section

The diesel air heater is connected to a 220 volt power supply using a regular cable and is started with just one click of a button and setting the room temperature regulator. How a diesel fuel gun works:

  1. The user pours diesel fuel or purified kerosene into the tank, plugs the device into the network and sets the desired air temperature.
  2. The fan and fuel unit are started, diesel fuel is supplied from the tank to the nozzle, where it is mixed with air.
  3. The fuel-air mixture in the form of a fine mist is injected into the chamber and ignited by an electric glow plug. A photocell detects the appearance of fire and after a few seconds the controller turns off the ignition electrode.
  4. The bulk of the air mixture, pumped by the fan, washes the walls of the combustion chamber from the outside, then the heated flow exits the “barrel” of the gun. A smaller part of the air burns together with the diesel engine and is released as exhaust gases.
  5. When the liquid fuel runs out or the burner goes out for other reasons, the photosensor will react and notify the control unit. The latter will stop the pump and shut off the diesel supply, the fan will stop working after 15-30 seconds.
  6. Combustion automatically turns off when the thermostat detects heat environment to the set temperature. After the room has cooled down, the burner will resume operation.
  7. Heaters from well-known brands are equipped with a device tip-over sensor, which breaks the electrical power circuits.

The simplified operation diagram clearly shows the movement of gases along with hot air

Clarification. If an emergency shutdown occurs, the heater will not start automatically. According to the product operating instructions, the user must identify and eliminate the cause of the stop, then repeat the ignition procedure.

In primitive or old models of liquid fuel guns, there is a manual start system with piezoelectric ignition. Such devices are equipped with automatic safety / overheating, but are not equipped with a temperature controller.

Indirect heating air heaters

Diesel fan heaters of this group are designed somewhat differently:

  • the combustion chamber is completely closed, the fireproof plate is sealed hermetically and forms the front wall of the firebox;
  • the forced air is heated only by the outer wall of the chamber, the heat exchanger and the reflective plate;
  • combustion products are discharged outside through the upper vertical pipe;
  • The heat gun needs to be connected to the chimney pipe.

Working diagram of a gun with a closed chamber and separate gas outlet through a heat exchanger

Reference. The heaters use two- and three-pass stainless steel heat exchangers. The air flow removes heat from the walls of the chamber and additional channels through which hot combustion products move. Depending on the design of the heat exchanger, the smoke makes 2 or 3 passes before going into the chimney.

Discharge of exhaust gases to the street makes it possible to use a diesel unit for heating enclosed spaces with insufficient heat. But it is still unacceptable to heat residential buildings with an indirect heating gun, the reason is the lack of a draft sensor and corresponding automation that protects people from fumes.

Design differences between infrared models

The idea of radiant heat transfer is local heating of surfaces falling within the gun's range of action. The irradiated area can be located indoors of any size or in the open air. It is not difficult to guess that in such situations it is useless to heat the air.

How does a diesel infrared gun differ from convective air heaters:

  • The source of radiant heat is the front fireproof screen;
  • to expand the radiation area, the diameter of the plate and housing was increased;
  • air is supplied in small volumes sufficient to burn diesel fuel and cool the burner;
  • the exit of flue gases is direct into the room through many small holes made in the screen.

Comparison. It is believed that infrared solar heaters are more economical than convective (air) heaters. Let us present the characteristics of two guns - direct combustion Ballu BHDP-30 with a power of 30 kW and a radiant heater “Master” XL 9 SR with an output of 29 kW. Diesel consumption in the first case is 2.4 kg/h, in the second – 2.3 kg/h, the difference is almost imperceptible.

The perforated screen emits infrared heat and simultaneously releases combustion products through the perforations

The design of an infrared liquid fuel fan heater is similar to the design of a similar gas gun. Both units heat surfaces instead of air and are often used for a variety of outdoor work in winter.

Fuel supply features

When studying the above diagrams, you probably noticed differences in the designs of the guns - some show an air pump, others show a liquid fuel pump. In products of different brands, diesel fuel can be supplied to the heater nozzle in two ways:

  1. Electromechanical.
  2. Ejection.

The first option involves the use of a main injector and a high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), shown in the photo. The fuel supply of a diesel car engine is arranged in a similar way. The pump raises the pressure in the main line, and the nozzle injects fuel into the chamber, where it mixes with air and ignites from high temperature (in an internal combustion engine - from compression).

Since the fuel is directed into the nozzle under pressure, a turbine is used to force air into the chamber

The ejection supply of diesel fuel works like this:

  1. Inside the low pressure injector, 2 channels converge - air and fuel.
  2. A rotary compressor installed at the rear of the gun forces air into the first channel, causing a vacuum to form in the second.
  3. An ejection effect occurs - the vacuum begins to draw fuel from the tank through the fuel pipe.
  4. Once in the nozzle, the diesel fuel is mixed with the air flow and directed into the chamber, where it is successfully burned.

A remarkable fact. The rotary compressor and the fan - blower of heated air are driven by one electric motor. That is, both impellers are mounted on a common shaft, and the speed and performance are controlled electronically.

In the ejector burner power system, the air flow draws in diesel fuel without a pump

Diesel fuel and air flow sucked in by the compressor undergo coarse and fine cleaning in appropriate filters. Expensive versions of heat guns are equipped with an LCD display and a diesel fuel level sensor in the tank.

Pros and cons of diesel guns

If you go by user reviews, the main advantage of solar heaters is autonomy. The air heater is indispensable in situations where there are no other energy sources - main gas and solid fuel, or the electricity consumption limit is severely limited.

Reference. Compressors and fans of powerful models with a heating capacity of over 120 kW consume about 1000 W of electricity. The household series device will “wind” the meter at 200-300 W.

Other advantages of liquid fuel heaters:

  1. Mobility of installation and efficiency of heating organization. The time required is minimal - I bought a gun - brought it to the place - filled it with diesel fuel - turned on the heating.
  2. The unit is easy to move from one site to another.
  3. The efficiency of the heater is quite high - manufacturers claim an efficiency of about 83%.
  4. Warm-up speed. According to this indicator, a diesel burner outperforms electric heating elements.
  5. Versatility. The device is suitable for open areas and any large premises, except residential ones.

Let us clarify an interesting point regarding efficiency. Some sellers make the following claims: Indirect combustion diesel heaters are less efficient than direct combustion heaters that emit gases indoors. They say that the efficiency of these installations reaches 100%, since the heat of combustion products is not discharged to the street.

In fact, the efficiency of various guns is approximately the same, but indirect heating devices actually throw some of the heat out along with the smoke. Now open the documentation of any direct combustion heater and read the requirements for safe operation: necessary for removing toxic gases supply and exhaust ventilation or intensive ventilation.

Bottom line: direct-flow guns release all the heat into the heated room, but 20-30% of this energy is carried away by ventilation. That is, the actual losses and efficiency of both heating devices are approximately the same, although direct-flow units are cheaper than chimney models.

Disadvantages of heat generators burning diesel and kerosene:

  • In terms of price, solar cannons are inferior to electrical appliances - convectors and fan heaters;
  • Diesel fuel is not the cheapest energy carrier:
  • operation of the heater is accompanied by the smell of diesel fuel and exhaust gases;
  • Average and low quality fuel sold at gas stations quickly clogs the working parts of the thermal gun with soot, and the device has to be serviced frequently.

A layer of soot on the lens of a photocell that detects the presence of a flame

Selection of liquid fuel heat generator

The first step is to determine the thermal power of the device. There are nuances here: a cannon is not allowed, since the unit is often used to heat large volumes and rooms without proper insulation. The following methodology is proposed:

  1. Measure and calculate the volume of the heated room V, m³;
  2. Find out the difference in temperatures outside and inside during the coldest period Δt, °C;
  3. Determine the dimensionless heat loss coefficient k of the building and calculate the heater power Q using the formula below.

Recommendation. The value of the coefficient k depends on the type and degree of thermal insulation of the building. For a metal hangar, garage k = 4, wooden shed - 3, brick country house - 2...2.9 (depending on the thickness of the walls). If the structure is well insulated, take a coefficient of 0.6-0.8, with average thermal insulation - 1...1.9.

Example. Let's calculate the thermal power of a solar gun for an uninsulated iron box 10 x 5 m with a ceiling height of 3 meters, the volume of the room is V = 10 x 5 x 3 = 150 m³. Let’s take the outside temperature to be minus 25 degrees, the inside temperature to be plus 10 °C, the difference Δt = 35 °C. How much heat is needed: Q = 150 x 35 x 4 / 860 = 24.4 kW.

When heating with powerful guns, air is supplied through several hoses and evenly distributed throughout the workshop

How to choose the right gun for operating conditions:

  1. A direct heating device is suitable for heating industrial premises, indoor construction sites, hangars and warehouses. If there are people constantly working in the building, it is a must!
  2. It is better to buy and install chimney thermal guns in private garages, car service stations, greenhouses, stables and other outbuildings.
  3. Infrared heating devices are great for any local heating. Example: a production workshop with high ceilings or an open area where it is not possible to heat the entire volume of air, but a limited area is quite possible.
  4. Use the heating installation selection algorithm presented in the table:

If you need to heat an entire small industrial facility, pay attention to outdoor versions of high-power guns. The installation is placed outside the building, and several air ducts are laid inside for the best distribution of flows, as shown above in the photo.

Heater maintenance and repair

During long-term operation of the gun, minor malfunctions arise that the user can eliminate with his own hands. Symptoms of problems and repair methods:

Scheme of fastening the spark plug and nozzle in the burner of the Master device

The glow plug and nozzle are located on the rear plane of the burner head. There are 2 tubes connected to the sprayer (air from the compressor and fuel supply), and a high-voltage cable to the igniter. The latter often hits ground, causing the spark to disappear from the spark plug.

The fuel strainer is located inside the supply tube, lowered into the tank. By the way, the container also needs to be washed every 500 hours of operation. The air purification elements are located on the rear panel of the compressor and are unscrewed with a screwdriver. How to clean a heat gun nozzle, watch the video:

Conclusion

Infrared and convection guns using diesel fuel are convenient and powerful heat sources that can work in difficult conditions. Factory-made devices are absolutely safe if you follow the fire safety measures clearly stated in the user manual. In addition to garages and workshops, heat generators are often used at construction sites to warm up plastered walls, concrete screeds and foundations poured in winter at sub-zero temperatures.
